thanks for that - I wish I'd seen all that before about a 2 year learning curve experimenting on my own. 

The only thing I'd add is that while there is always an excuse to buy more stuff to make pretty, for effective jig heads simple white is enough.  I then make them pretty with permanant markers, countershaded tails in bucktail, and some sparkly fly-tying material in the tails. 

With care you can get a jig that drops through the water with action in it's tail (you want to avoid the swimming paint brush effect).  With these jigs, a long cast can be held on a tight line and the jig will be fishing effectively as it sinks.  I catch a lot of fish on jigs dropped on a tight line.
