I see the last 2 post was mine, some days ago. Is it just slow here or is it me:)

Pleeeeaase help me with this one as it is a brand new method for catching barbels for me. I never used this kind of bait before.
I bought some 20mm helibut pellets in the barbel section of an online shop, so it must be barbel bait lol.

My question is, how many of these on a hair-rig for barbels? 1, 2 or 3? I will be fishing at different venues, slow moving rivers and dams.

I will be using a 3/0 Circle hook.

I believe these halibut pellets might be more of a carp bait but the cats wont leave them as they are very oily and stinky...
I hair rig them and fish them with a size 2 hook no different to specimen but you can add a bigger circle and hook as many pellets as you see fit.
Do yourself a favour and see how quick the dissolve before letting it sit for hours...bear in mind current etc.
I would say that these pellets are going to give you loads of smaller cats...
BIG baits = BIG cats period!

Most guys targeting barbel do not use small baits on hair rigs. If you want to catch BIG barbel that is.

You will catch the odd barbel on this set-up but it is not recommended for big barbel.

I also use circle hooks exclusively for barbel but with BIG baits. I use a Dacron bridle to attach all my baits to the circle hooks, no matter what bait I use, this ensures the hook is open and sets every time in the corner of the mouth. 3/0 circle hooks would be considered tiny for the baits I use.

If you just want to catch some barbel your idea will work although not ideal, if you wanna catch BIG cats I have serious doubts that it will work.

Hair rig a day old or a patty or a fish head. Halibut pellets are normally specimen baits and Specimen baits are designed for carp bud. there a few gulp products like pellets and fish in this sauce stuff but no where near as good as a grassy head or a patty, I doubt anyone will disagree with that . These bait mainly attract carp and will definitely not work as well as a nice fresh tasty piece of meat from the local water. If you are blanking using those try a smaller bait like a fillet or a smaller platty. It will probably result in a smaller fish but none the less it's a pull.

Hi Barbelman,

As Mr. IWyk said in his previous post...BIG baits = Big barbel... Just as an example I used a semi-whole 1.5kg muddie as bait rigged on a 10/0 circle and got picked up by a 12kg barbel. The barbel just took the bait and set-off with it..

I am not saying you won't catch a big barbel with the pellets as I have read of 20kg+ barbel being caught on small floats intended for carp... but you will also catch a lot of rats...

I only use the rig described by IWyk and have always hooked the barbel in the corner of the mouth(I only use circle hooks 8/0 or 10/0) - it works like a charm.

Good luck.

Thanks guys. I need bigger hooks it seems.
I hoped the pellets could be a good alternative as I feel so bad killing a carp for bait, and blanking with it. If it works, then it is worth it.

Lol yes. No I will still do it, but if pellets with supposedly high attractants could give me the same results, it would have been better. But now I know they are not as good._seal1_

I just want to add, my brother caught a 12kg barbel with his carp specimen rig while targeting carps. nr8 hook with 2 quattro  boilies. The barbels teeth almost destroyed his braid on his hooklink. That is why I thought of catching them with pellets made for them, on a hair rig.

You can rig the pellets to the hook with braid, but the remainder of your trace should be at least .60mm nylon. The nylon is very abrasion resistant when it comes to the barbel's "teeth"...

Hi.
My wife hate killing live fish so she started using calamari steaks and whole praws. To my suprize she outfished me last week.
Her bigest was 8kg and smalest 500g. She caught 7 cats for the weekend an I only 3.
Mine was 9kg 11.3 and 14kg.
I used 2kg carp head with a single 10 mustad circle with a 1/0 red tarpen sliding hook to help set the circle. You can also use frozen day old chics. You get them vacuum packed in packs of 5 for R20 at fish shops.
Like all the guys said.... BIG BAITS= BIG FISH.
Good luck!

I can believe that. I read an international fishing magazine and it talked very highly of the prawns.

@Alex
I have bought 200lb Kraken braid for hooklinks. Seems like great stuff but I still need to test them.

Netso!

Barbel can eat 20% of their body weight in one go so theoretically a 10kg Barbel can eat a 2kg muddy no problem.

Smaller baits produce too many small barbel(although they in turn are good as bait).
