FG Braid knot

Hi guys, I just found this FG knot- never heard of it or tried it before.

I have been looking for a small know to join my leader to braid for a while and this seems to be it

has anyone tried it before? what is your experience with it?

my only concern is it seems that the fluro / mono appears to just run "though" the braid!

would like to hear your inputs

The only knot I use to join my leader never had a problem super strong when tied propley. Just practice till you get it right you will never use another knot.

Hi Rocknsurf
I changed over to the FG couple of months ago, also couldn't believe it could be better due to the leader remaining "straight", but works like a bomb - definitely stronger, and being half as thick as double-uni / etc. is a big plus. As the guy says - seems the harder you pull, the tighter the braid wraps grip it...
Took a few times to get used to tying), but now i'm quicker with it than the old way.
I do 24 turns to be extra safe, and right at the end I do the 2 overhands over the leader then four overhands of the braid over braid, just to make the transition past the leader's snipped end a tad smoother.

Great , thanks for the feedback guys.

will have to give it a try this evening, certainly looks a lot smaller than any other knot I've tried before.

like any new knot, just takes a little while to get it right I guess.

Its the ONLY knot i use for braid to mono connections.

Was odd when I first did it, but now I can do it chop chop!

The trick is to keep the braid tight but holding it in your teeth.

If you Google the knot there is a simpler way holding the braid in your hand rapped around two fingers this is how I do it. Can even tie it on the boat in rough whether very quickly

My baby finger always ends up going blue because of the braid wrapped around it using this method. It definitely does seem easier this way although I'm used to the method where you hold it between your teeth so it's no biggy for me

I used to have that problem too. Now I use a old glove to cover the two small fingers even a piece of rag works well

I also love this knot. I use it on almost all my leaders up just the leaders that are thick say my 1.2mm I use a knot that I do not know the name of(I heat up the ling to make a thick end and then a 10 turn uni to connect it to my main line)

The fg is super small and glides through the guides with no effort!

Wow, I think this must be one of the best kept new bits of fishing info in a while

until yesterday I had never heard of it and was using the uni, and would often cringe when I heard the know go through my eyes.

tried it last night for the first time and I was a bit all thumbs to start but quickly got the hang of it.

thanks for the info guys

it sure does look like the way to go.

Think this will be my knot of choice from now on for joining leaders to my braid

+1 on all the replies! Have not had one fail on me yet. i add a tiny drop of superglue on the overhand knots to keep them from fraying over time as i cast them trough the tip more often than not.

Another way to keep tension on the braid as well as blood flowing to your extremeties is to tie a small loop on the end of your braid. After threading your braid through the rod guides you simply slip it over the reel handle and use the reel to tension your main line.
This also frees up both hands for the weave.

The fg is an excellent knot, I've used it for many years and have absolute confidence in it, I have landed everything from 500g blacktail to 45kg GT using the knot and wouldn't use another. Some pointers...

Don't make the knot too long, it's counterproductive. I do 12 wraps, I would not recommend you make more than 15. The reason is when you tension the line, if you've done the wraps properly; meaning no air between the wraps, you want the line to bite down hard at the front end and still get some grip toward the bottom end. It's virtually impossible to pull a 20+ wrap FG tight enough, which will lead to problems.

To prevent your little finger turning blue, as someone commented, the trick is to make the first wrap around your little finger at an angle and then the following wraps back over the first, to trap the loops. That way you don't need to apply nearly as much pressure and you won't even feel any pressure on your little finger at all.

If you're just starting out learning the knot, use heavy braid and leader. It's a lot easier to maneuver, because the leader is more stiff, so it's a bit more forgiving of mistakes. As you build muscle memory it gets very easy.

Personally I don't make any half hitches. I do a 12 turn fg followed directly by a 5 turn rizutto and that's it. It's a much slimmer knot than a standard fg with a bunch of half hitches thrown in, it's quicker to tie and it has never let me down. Mechanically the rizutto is a stronger finish than half hitches, as it pulls in the opposite direction to the fg knot.

Hope this helps someone.
