Cob in the river.

Hi guys, I need some advise to what lures/size and colors to use when fishing for cob in the river? I've made about 1000+ casts the last couple of days, and not one hit! Would also like to know what you use for Garrick in the river?
Thanks in advance

Hi PV9,

I haven't had success with Cob on lure either so I wont comment on that, but I had some success with Garrick in estuaries this past season:

The lures I used were:
* small chisel nose plug with a read head
* Strike Pro Thai Stick in the pearl colour
* Rapala X-rap Slashbait (10cm) in clown colour

get some bucktail jigs in different sizes and color. garrick can't leave them alone, and they are great for kob. work them near the surface for garrick and jerk slowly along the bottom for kob and grunter.
olive or white for garrick, white or pink for kob.
also try some paddle tails with weighted hooks.

Thanks guys! Tank I'll have a look at those lures but have no idea what the look like. I have caught a couple of cob on the orca paddle tail, but nothing on bucktail

Bucktails catch virtually anything that swims, so it's always a good bet. For kob, you should get some clone lures, they're very effective. Rapala X-raps also work well...make sure your retrieve is very slow, you should be hitting the bottom often.

Garrick will eat most lures retrieved fast - gt ice-creams are a good choice for topwater, as are thai sticks for the smaller fish, I've caught loads on small Halco outcast lures and I've had a few on Onda's.

An effective technique for garrick on bucktails is a very fast retrieve while putting the index finger of the hand holding the rod out so your line catches your finger on every turn of the spool. That gives the bucktail a bit of a twitch at speed, which garrick seem to find attractive. If you're using braid it's advisable to use a casting glove if you'll be doing this all day, or you'll likely have a sore index finger.
