OKUMA Spinning Rods

Hi gents,

I bought myself a Metaloid 14`6 and was very happy with the rod until I discovered, after my second outing, that there is a crack in one of the joints.

I am afraid that this crack will move further on as one can see that the sponge inside the black moved up a bit.

Is there anyone who has experienced a similar problem with other rods? What did you guys do about it? I am just afraid that this crack might move on until it breaks

Has anyone tested out the Azores yet?

I know its a "cheap" rod, but I'm looking for a rod to use for edibles, and on paper it doesn't seem to bad for the price.

Don't fish with the Metaloid again, take it back and see if it will be replaced. (if you can pull the EVA plug back to where it is flush)

If you brought me the rod like that my assumption would be that you had pushed the section down on something ie beach sand, thereby forcing the sponge and the sand into the section causing it to split. (but that's just an assumption)

The rod will still work if fished like that but I'd recommend that you get a replacement mid section (they have sections available)

I have fished the 12' Azores as well as the 14'

Bit on the heavy side but not as heavy as a brick.

The 12' is Super Powerful with a soft tip and I wouldn't hesitate fishing shad with it and then upping the tackle and teaching some Spotties or Cracker a lesson.

Howzit guys, sory for the hijack. I would like to know how does the BM SS 80-50-450 blank compare to the metaloid/makaira blank in terms of weight, casting ability and pulling power? Not sure if this is a fair question? Thanks in advance!

Not to be compared to the metaloid. The 80-50-460 is in the same class as the Makaira 15'.

They cast the same.and pull the same.

I have 80-50-460 blanks that I build on but the blanks cost more than the full Makaira rod.

That's probably why I've not been able to sell my 80-50 and 60-50 blanks/custom builds anymotr

Thanks for the info, I have a 80-50-450 with K-series built by you... I bought the rod second hand, but I have been to scared to test it to the max when it comes to casting. Heaviest I've gone is 6oz with mullet head(but holding back a little on the cast). How heavy do you recon can I go without holding anything back?

I got myself the Makaira. The reel seat and the alignment dot does no line up. So with the rod assembled with dots together the reel does not line up with the guides. Is that suppose to be like that?

No but if you align the guides and reel seat (ignoring the dots) do they then align. If so the dots were printed o. The wrong place.

If nothing aligns then you have a town with assembly fault and they will exchange for you

Horizon vs Makaira..?

Makaira. Horizon in my opinion is way over priced. Makaira is a good blank with good components. You paying extra for brand name in the Horizon. Just my opinion.

Howzit guys.
Beeb reading the thread over and over and thabks Enigma for shedding much light. I have a question... What are the differences between the metaloid and makaira? Do the blanks set them apart? Read somewhere that they both have toray blanks. Im about to purchase a grinder rod and having a toss up between the two

Hey guys.

I bought both the makaira and the metallic today at Kobie. Spheros 20k on the makaira for the big boys and the daiwa bg6500 for the metaloid.

Got back from kruger national park in Jan and someone decided to help themselves to everything in my house including all my gear. One of those permanent borrowing deals SA is so well known for. Anyway...

Never had a grinder setup and going to Sodwana this weekend so needed new gear and I thought let's take the plunge. So got both setups and will let you gents know what's the outcome next week.
