Jighead Painting

Hi jiggers. I have been making my own jigheads for a while now and have been unable to import liquid paints to finish them due to their flammable properties. I have however, been using a powder paint that is extremely durable, yet time consuming to work with. One has to heat up the jighead and dip it in the fluffed up powder. This is a difficult technique to master and inevitably results in a thick and uneven coating. I have just come across a website that offers a solution. Check this out: http://www.tjstackle.com/Instvideos.htm . Hope it helps.

hi dingleberry

try cheap nail polish. i use it to paint my drop shot jig heads. easy to apply & brings them to life a bit more -especially in the bigger sizes (upward of 1 oz)

cheers

only use coloured ones now . i think the jig & lure looks
far more realistic so good for my own confidence when fishing.
use mostly chartruese, red , blues. all look good especially with clear or pearl minnows.

I use the Mini Pot enamel paints on my clouser minnows and other flies, once dry, coat with Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails nail polish, they last! Can not see why this won't work on jig heads..

thanks for that - I wish I'd seen all that before about a 2 year learning curve experimenting on my own.

The only thing I'd add is that while there is always an excuse to buy more stuff to make pretty, for effective jig heads simple white is enough.  I then make them pretty with permanant markers, countershaded tails in bucktail, and some sparkly fly-tying material in the tails.

With care you can get a jig that drops through the water with action in it's tail (you want to avoid the swimming paint brush effect).  With these jigs, a long cast can be held on a tight line and the jig will be fishing effectively as it sinks.  I catch a lot of fish on jigs dropped on a tight line.
