We hook them fairly frequently fishing for yellows on the Vaal River. Powerful fish and their bulk in the rapids is very effective.Great fun to the extent that they have become one of my target species.

Hi Dave B.. How do you manage to target them/identify them on the Vaal. Do you only look for fish who feed "Tails up"? I have been fishing for yellows for about 3 yeas now and have never caught a carp. I wouldn't mind though

Yes, I look for the fish with the tail up. Sometimes they are not interested at all, but often they will take the normal flies we use for yellows. Generally they will take whatever is working for the yellows. I suppose that is what is around in terms of food source.

All the PTN variations are my 'go to' flies.

Enjoy.

I lived in Melbourne for 3 years and i was lucky enough to have access to Lake Eppalock. When the lake was at capacity, apparently it held about as much water as Sydney harbour. Some days I walked a good 15 km along the shores, just sight fishing for carp. The fish were all in pristine condition, ready to put up a good fight. The only down side however was that (by law), you have to kill the carp since it is an invasive species.
I spent a lot of summer days sight fishing for carp which made it one of my all time favorite fresh water species to target on fly.
Check out the Facebook group called Kangaroo Carp.
