The only reason why I say keep it plain and simple for Live bait Throwing is the fish don't hang around all day most times and when the smash happens you wanna be as quick and effective as possible.
We used none of the fancy stuff, pop the livie in pinned behind the head, just behind the Shore break, near the river mouth. If the fish are there you will get the pull. The longer you take to rebait could just mean not getting your quota or nothing.
Another trick is to put a portion of toothpick under the skin and pin the hook under that, also works like a dream. Plain and simple.
Most Kob in Kzn are caught very close in, even Leeries are caught close in. It's the sliding technique that has made it a lot easier to keep a livie alive longer on the hook and also easy for literally anyone to catch a Leerie.
I would only slide if the livies are scarce and I want the best possible chance for a pull.
Mullet work well near a river mouth whereas a Shad Black tail or a Karranteen will work in rocy areas. The Shad is deadly anywhere for a Kob. Live Mozzies and Mackerel also work from the surf.
I am almost sure you will get Mozzies along the wharf sides in R/Bay. Dbn Piers, Addington...... Plenty Mozzies at night. Even the Mackerels put in an appearance. Now is the right time of the year for them.
Tight Lines guys hope you catch a couple!!!!
