Dropshot/artificials in the Umzimkulu estuary

Hi there,

Does anybody have some useful information on fishing the Umzimkulu estuary with lures?
we will be targeting any gamefish on artificials. More specifically Kingies and Kob.

Does topwater lures work there early mornings and late afternoons for the Kingies or should we stick with the deeper running lures?
Are the mangrove lines along the banks good for a variety of fish or should we stick to the channels that run more to the middle of the estuary?
Any specific color variations that work in particular?

We are heading there this coming weekend and any feedback will be much appreciated. ;)

Thanks
Rudi

Hi there i have personally caught many rock salmon kingies and cob there the best spots is just in front of a hotel there called umuzikulu river lodge or something like that and by the resturant slash sports bar place i think its called spillers or something i find that dropshot withapink paddle tail or a pearl blue shad paddle tail works best we have also had lots of success trawling against the magrows with small live mullets hope this helps.

there is alot of info on it on a website called the sardine.co.za as the author lives against the river and fishes it daily , as he also manufactures his own brand of lures

Thanks Brendon!

Yes, that helps a lot thanks. Yeah, the place is called Umzimkulu Marina. That's where we are going this weekend. Spillers Wharf is the spot in front of the restaurant.

I will be sure use the info you have given me. Thanks.

Have you caught some cob on paddle tails there as well?

I will also post a report next week as to how it went.

My thinking is that there must be a lot of fish patrolling the mangrove lines where all the bait fish hide out. So will definitely give that a shot with some rapalas and maybe a live mullet.

Thanks

i grew up in Hiberdene just around the corner and fished that river daily i have caught thousands of kob there , but only a hand full on mullet
the owner of that website and lure company lives at that resort his name is sean

Thanks. Yeah, I have spoken to Sean as well. Just thought I'd do a post on Sealine to see if I could gather some more information ;)

We have fished quite a few estuaries and prefer the artificial angling. I can't resist throwing a popper if the water is glassy early mornings, so that will probably be my first tactic and as the day progresses I will trawl a couple Rapalas and slowly bounce some paddle tails of the structures and channels.

Thanks again.
