Sustain FG 10000

Hi Guys!

Can someone please tell me what type of drag the Sustain FG 10000 has. Is it FELT or CARBON? I'm frustrated because I somehow cant get anything on the net regarding the drag material.

The drag is said to be 13kgs/28lbs which is more than enough, but I would love to know if it is a carbon drag or not. It just doesn't make sense to me to have a bigger reel with a FELT drag.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the link PSY, but maybe Im missing something... Cant see anything on there regarding the actual drag material. Its more of a generic description of the full range of Sustains.

I know for a fact that the smaller FG reels have FELT washers (something they upgraded in the FI) but what about the older FG 6&10K?

The reason I'm asking is that I don't have much faith in FELT washers. Yet I have seen guys on the tele and internet catch huge fish with the bigger Sustains. Fish that would, in my mind, destroy felt washers.

@visserman, I can open them up myself and have a look... But I (specifically) shouldn't... Not if I want to use them again soon... ;)

I have a 5000 and it has felt washers. Shimano probably has some stupid marketing name for it like "smoothassbabybottom" or something like they called those old crap pencil lead washers "dartanium". You can get a Finnor reel or a Quantum cabo for much less and they have carbon fiber washers. I think you can buy them after market though from Smoothdrag, their service is excellent, gets sent in the post.

Hi Guys!

Thanks for the input guys!

The Stradic FJs came with felt. I had a 5000 and forgot to loosen the drag after a fishing trip (never a good idea to compress the felt). Next trip got stuck into a Smoothy and the felt disintegrated... Upgraded to Carbon! That's partly why I am not a fan. As a rule I always loosen the drag after rinsing with fresh water, but, I do forget some times...

The new Stradic 5000 FK comes with Carbon. The smaller reels still have felt.

I really hope the bigger Sustains have Carbon, I suppose I wont know until I open them up... HOLD MY SHOES...

I have a 10k and was wondering the exact same. In some posts it states felt washers and others Carbon.

Blikkiesvis, did you purchase your reel brand new or second hand? - reason for the question, if it was second hand maybe it was changed from felt to carbon..

Hi! No I bought two 10K's brand new and both have Carbon drags.

Must say it was a relief to see the carbon drags, Im not a felt fan at all... Although it is fine in smaller reels I suppose.

Thanks for the feedback Blikkiesvis. I haven't even spooled mine as yet, heading to Sodwana next weekend and hoping to put it through its paces.

Just FYI - The only known issue I picked up on other forums was the clicker gives in rather quickly.
