Guys, what's the latest on night fishing requirements in Durban Harbor on a Cat R boat with regards to life jackets?

Do you have to wear your life jacket, at all times, at night, whilst fishing ?

What rating life jacket is required?

Hi DP, first of all does your boat have a COF for 2017?

if not, have it inspected by a safety officer at your club and ensure that your boat has an all round white light, navigation lights and deck lights.

In terms of your safety equipment, you will need the Cat R safety requirements. The life jackets for day and night fishing in the harbour is the 100nm type. You only need the 150nm for night fishing offshore.

The life jackets are only requireed to be worn when your vessel is moving, when fishing you do not need to wear them.

If you choose not to join a club, contact SAMSA and get one of their safety officers to come register and inspect your vessel.

You will also need a port control harbour disk, fishing permit and vessel permit (Which you get together with your fishing license at the post office and only for the skipper)
If you not with a club then you get your port control disk after your boat has been inspected by the SAMSA safety officer at the building alongside Customs and excise. You need to show them your COF and then pay the annual harbour license fee

Thanks very much for the informative response.
You have confirmed exactly what I had thought.

I had heard a story and it worried me, thinking that the rules had changed again, and that I would need to get the 150N life jackets.

Nope 150nm life jackets are "ONLY" for fishing offshore at night. I've just upgraded my vessels catagory to CAT B night rated and have had to endure the kick in the nuts with the heavily over priced 150nm, needing 5 of them, plus the light that needs to be attached.

I unfortunately did not read this thread previously. I was told by the company that will be doing my boat's COF that 150N lifejackets are required for night fishing in Durban Harbour. I will show them this thread when next I see them and see what they have to say.

See 5.4 of marine notice 18 of 2012 which refers to Cat C day only and Cat R life jacket requirements - 100 nm

5.3 refers to offshore only and fishing at night, Cat B (40 nautical miles) - 150 nm

This is the survey form the safety officer will utilize when doing your COF. Its downloaded from the SAMSA website.

Take note in this survey form they only ask for 50nm life jackets. Those are the personal floatation devices used by water skiers.

The Cat R guys will have to confirm, but from what i recall the harbour clubs require 100nm life jackets. Definately not the 150 nm as you guys have been told
