I want to take the boat up to where the Vaal river comes into the Bloemhof dam I hear this is where one will catch those big barbell. but there is very limited info on this . where can you launch . Is there accommodation up there ? have you ever fished that far up ?

are the only public entrances to the dam Sand veld and game reserve ?

I'm familiar with the area as you probably gathered from my Facebook videos. (I answered your question about Bamboes)

I've camped on the Vaal river side of Bloemhof dam many times in the past, but its private land and the new owners of my usual spot no longer allows fishing there. It's very secluded and there are no accommodation anywhere.

Launch at Sandveld and make the long 40km+ run up to the area discussed.

Personally I find more and bigger catfish up the Vetrivier sid as it has many more flats with drop off's

I don't know the Vet river side very well, but it's true that it's the preferred area for most looking for big barbel and I've seen the monsters caught there. It's also not such a long journey and that makes it safer as well compared to a Vaal river expedition.

My new boat is not capable of handling the weather on a bad day at Bloemhof, so I'll be exploring the Vet river side this year. I cannot risk going all the way up to the Vaal and then the wind picks up, I've had to turn around before and don't want to get into trouble all the way there in the middle of nowhere.
