Conventional Reels for Bait Boat Fishing

I currently use Shimano 10000 baitrunners when fishing with my bait boat. I have been experiencing 2 issues with these reels, not because they are Shimanos but because of the spinning reel concept. I have a problem with the line jamming by "pinching" itself on the spool when I take it out and that it starts twisting after a few fishing trips. I am thinking of trying conventional reels eg Penn 500L or something similar. Has anyone tried this and would you recommend conventional reels for fishing with a bait boat?

Hi

The best is to not engage the bait runner function and to open the bail arm. This should prevent line twist. If you have a fishing partner with you, get them to place their finger on the line spool to create a bit of drag.

Have to agree with Axle, open the bail arm. Also when spooling new line remember to spool line onto the reel the same way it comes of the spool, it reduces line twist and memory.

I had same issue ,pulling on long distances 100m plus , line is jerking as it is digged in . It also depand on reel and how it lays the line .Then reel with deep spool is also not a ideal for this setup.
Only way is two fisherman . One drives boat and other pulls line out of the reel with hand when it starts to jerk.
Twisted line is a bad news too . Multipler will work better but somhow not suited to my opinion .

Bit off the topic - twisted line - how to properly untwist 200m of line ?
Got idea but did not tried , sounds bit silly but maybe can work. Anybody tried following : hook line with small ball bearing swiwel to a larger helium filled kiddies ballon and let go line in full out .

I agree, the only way to reduce line twist is to open the bail arm when taking lines out.

I found a good way to remove the twist from line.Take the line out as far as you need with nothing on the end.Let it lie on the surface of the water. Then just reel it in,it will uncoil itself.I use this method with mono and braid.

I will reiterate what has been said above...
Always open your bail arm when taking line in with any boat as this will eliminate line twist!
There are leads on the market like the below that is supposed to "fix" line twist, but for that price, I would rather burn the old line and replace with new.

The drag on the 500's are really crap for carp fishing.
These are sea reels not made for soft mouths of carp.
You will see that you will have allot of hook pulls.

Your 10000's are the ideal reels just like the rest said don't let it run out on the drag/bait runner but flip open the bail arm. Even if you are alone if you keep going on the bait boat you don't even need to keep pressure on the line going out.

The reason the line might be sticking is it could have been spooled too lightly initially. When spooling the line always keep a little pressure between your fingers as the line gets spooled.

My mind was made up for me, last night my wife arrived home with 2 brand new Penn 500L's :)

Don't you think multiplier reels are a bit of an overkill for conventional angling? Shimano 10000 baitrunners are perfect for conventional angling, heck I've fished Tzaneen with DL10000's.

After reading how simple the solution to my problem was I agree that they are, but I don't have the heart to tell my wife that:):)
