I approach the landowner directly and offer to pay and am prepared to pay. Sometimes they say no, sometimes a price is agreed on and sometimes they are only too happy that someone took the time to ask and it is for mahala and a relationship is built.

Also inform them that you will look after your "swim" by throwing away all rubbish and cleaning up after yourself, leaving it the same way you found it. Most of the farmers HATE it when their place is left untidy and dirty, that's what discourages them from allowing people onto their properties.
