Howzit guys, been wanting to catch one of these for a long time and finally caught one yesterday, 460m deep. Unusual fish, their rib bones are flat, are about 2 cm wide and are stacked on top of each other forming a super strong structure, you cant cut through it and have to cut it out when you fillet the fish. Brined the fillets then into the fridge covered with pichitto paper for a couple of days for umami https://www.flickr.com/gp/151675609@N02/5Zm503

Great table fare fish...ike jime, brined it for an hour, kept it in the fridge for 3 days in pichitto, marinade in garlic, ginger, olive oil, salt and pepper, sear it in a pan for 2 minutes then into the oven for 10 minutes on 175 degrees. Very moist and tasty fish.

Interesting catch, and great table fare Over here the bluenose trevalla is becoming sought-after by recreational anglers, now that electric reels are readily available. Bag limit is 2 fish per angler, and weights around 20-40kg is common. Excellent table qualities as well ![]() Last edited on Thu Apr 5th, 2018 04:51 am by DocPhil |

Ninja - Ya, it was hard work watching my electric reel bring the fish up...lol. Didn't think i would enjoy an electric reel, but it is loads of fun and you never know what you will find on the other end. The water is 560m to 800m deep where i fish and the locals often catch Yellowfin Tuna down there as well. The Shimano Beastmaster is awesome, as the rod and reel are light and you use the rod without elec power just as you do a stand-up rod if your battery runs flat. Doc. - yeah i was hoping to get into some of those Blue-nose Trevally, but i have not seen any photos of those from the Red Sea. The guys catch a fair amount of these Sickle-fin Pomfrets and there are a lot of swords and huge squid.

That Sickle-Fin is an amazing looking fish. Never heard of it before... Got quite a "jack" sort of body. Thanks for the interesting post.

Hey Limpopo, ya very Jack-like, the scales are super hard, almost like a lizard and the meat goes all the way to the front of the head. I had 2 x 16/0 circles with big skippy fillets for swords and the Pomfret ate the guts of the skippy that i had on a 12/0 J hook.

Dr. ya I reeled it a bit manually on the way up and those things bump all the way to the boat, was around 6-7 kg's, but they do get quite a bit bigger. Red Sea .
