Hi all. I'm looking for a pair of boat rods for an 8 and 10 year old. They're currently using little 1.1m ugly stiks and have landed some good fish. The rods are a bit short for them now. Online, I've seen medium light trevalas at around R800. Cheap for that rod, but at 7ft, I think they're a bit long. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. I'd grab the Trevalas and put them into storage if I were you... Cutting them would be a sin. I personally like the Shimi Scimitars. They are good value with decent enough components. Otherwise stay with the Ugly Stick range and get slightly heavier/longer ones for them. Thing is, it's shocking how fast kids grow up, and buying for them now is kinda pointless... One needs to buy for them for how they will be in 6 months or a year. At least then, you could get 2 years use out of the rods. My 5c

I agree with the Sloppy choice; this is bang for your buck. I have caught decent fish with it and never experienced any problems.

Thanks for the advice gents. My boys are quite small, 22kg an 26kg, and I don't mind spending a bit. I've seen the 5.6 sloppy a few years ago. It looked a bit heavy. Do you know if the 4.6 will handle a 5 to 6 ounce sinker?

Travella guides are very fragile. Designed for casting but not for any abuse associated with lighties throwing them around. Look at some Elbe boat rods or if you want to spend a bit more consider king Fisher jetski or Bonito rods. They are light, cost effective and bend all the way back giving them a bit more power on the fish. Both are cheap but fairly good and then replace them when they get a little older.
