Uvongo Fishing

Gents, ladies and/or others (I assume NOTHING!)

My wife has surprised this Valie with a trip to the sea for my birthday. We'll be staying in Uvongo for a week in the middle of December. I searched the forums, but the latest posts regarding Uvongo were dated 2012.

Since the trip is as much for her and the kids as it is for me, I want to spend my allotted fishing time actually fishing instead of fact-finding and driving around looking for a likely spot - hence the research now.

As per the thread description, I am a novice when it comes to surf fishing and I need some advice/guidance.

The equipment at my disposal are a couple of 10ft medium-heavy rods with matching baitrunner reels. I plan to surf fish only - rocks seem too dangerous for me, nevermind our boys (10 and 3) and boats are out of our budget.

Long story short:
My boys and I want to fish by the sea with my (basic) carp rods and reels.
I need to find out:
Where to fish
What to fish (rigs & bait)
What do I need over and above rods and reels

Any help, advice, guidance or ridicule will be greatly appreciated!

December is not one on my favorite fishing months.

Fishing from the Pier an early morning or late afternoon shad would be your best bet as they are often still around in December before they bugger off down to the cape.

Many years ago I had a blast fishing for shad from the pier. December might be a bit late for them. You can also target smaller fish from there for example streepies and blacktail, this is a blast for the kids and should be safe if the swell is not high and the sea not rough.
Your rods are a bit overkill for small species use rods around 7ft with light reels and line around the 3-5kg mark. Good bait is strips of tjokka and prawn.
Pop into any local tackle store for good advice. This is what I always do before I start fishing a new area.

Off the pier, for shad you want to fish half an hour before and after the sun rises. Drift a whole sardine with 3 hooks and wire trace that is cottoned on. One hook through the lip, one in the middle and one near the tail.

There is a couple of places you can try

Orange rocks -
Wild waves = past Shelly beach

AT the lagoon there is a pub Between Uvongo and Shelly beach - just behind the Pub is a few spots - You can park you car in the car park there by the Pub and walk around the pub - There is a few rocks if you want to catch close to the rocks

St  Micheals - Next to the swimming pool

Have fun -

If you want to catch catfish The place behind the bar is perfect !!
Night fishing will keep you busy ( The pub is normally busy so the vehicle will be safe
in the car park )

Just remember it is saltwater specie not freshwater
And beware of the spikes ( Top fin and side fins !!)
If the pinch you you will know about it - If it does happen use boiling water
(Very hot water) Pour it over the penetrate area
