Hi there guys I'm very new to deep sea fishing, so new I have only been once but love it and would like to do it a lot more, I have been doing a lot of reading and research and been wandering why would I want my own boat over using carters(I would love my own boat one day)but when I look at all involved, owning your own boat and the cost of fuel per day, there does not seem a huge difference in paying a daily fee to a charter or am I mistaken, my plan is to use charters for a year or two,to gain experience and then get my skippers and hopefully by then will be able to make an informed decision on what type of vessel to go for if any or just keep using charters, I would like as many opinions as possible ,big thank you

It's a lot of fun to have your own boat, but as Fin says... If you're not on it regularly, then it's just not worth it. I was passionate about my sea boat, but eventually, reality set in (constant COF renewals... watching flares expire, paying insurance premiums) and I sold it... I would like another boat but fortunately, I'm too sensible nowdays to succumb to the itch.

Twice a year I'm sitting with the same decision what to do! I have three boats (not bragging), but it is hard to decide what to do, going with the 17.6 ft Z craft-invader to Moz, 15.6ft Ace craft Mono to Shelly or 4.5m stingray rubber duck to Kosi??
But as Limpopoking mentioned, good argument!, it is very costly to own a (even small) boat. Trailor registration,COF, Bouyancy, repairs and services can put you back R 5k per year easily per boat.
Extra fuel on your towing vehicle, do you have a reliable 4x4 to do launches with or to tow? You will always have friends to help or go along, but at your expense!!All empty promises to help with the launching cost and fuel,sleeping arrangements, food but at the end of the day you and you alone are cleaning the boat, sorting parking etc. while the rest of your "friends" have a lekker holiday as they have just jumped of a Charter Boat!Rather invest in a holiday cottage and charter, but always get more information on all charters before you commit! Hang around and ask people what their specific experience was! SOme charters does not stay on the water long, other can drain you from early till late?
I know this is not helping you with your question, but for deepsea fishing Charters, people that knows the spots, you will be running thousands of fuel and catch nothing.

the best advise I can give you is to join a deepsea angling club, just like Imbelu!!!
what does that get you....well plenty opportunities!!!
interclub komps. not every one likes it, but at least you do not need to have your own boat.
new friens, who all own boats, who knows how stuff works.
so in the next few weeks we are off to Sodwana for a fishing trip between 3x friends, we share costs etc.
our next trip for six nights is R 4k per person.
we are 3x men going down.
this includes accommodation, fuel down and back and for the boat.
as well as food!!!.
after this trip I have a rock and surf trip in feb.
march we are in Sodwana for the all inland
in april for a week, sharing costs again for a week sommer doing the cuda comp.
may we have zinkwazi interclub and later on shelly interclub
then a month or 2 off then Richards bay or Sodwana again for another interclub comp.
another week of fishing.
then its rock and surf time for me until oct.
so in all it is about knowing the right people and joining the right people.
last year, my friend towed my boat down with his vehicle.
so not all costs are from my pocket as such.
if you guys need contact number for the club, just state so.
oja, one last thing.
no politics at all allowed at our club!!!!

Depends on how much you pay..someone though has to pay for the fuel, which on a trip to the deep and back could run into a few grand!

You have been on one charter only and you liked it.
Well.....I have been going on Charters for past 15 years and now sort of had enough - looking for the boat.
I had fantastic days and bad experience too.
Lately I charter the whole boat or share with one friend . R4500-5000 for bottom and little bit of trolling
or Marlin Trip R 9000 + ( its a must to try)
Charters where you share with many ( 4-10 people ) I don't do any more unless I am really desperate.
Why ?
I know that Boat is a huge financial burden but I think nothing can replace the joy of doing what you want to do and not what charter skipper does.
You can launch boat when you want and explore different fishing techniques and you will be in constant search for new reefs with more fish and not visiting only close by reefs ( charter) with no fish . Then night trip is also an experience of its own.
And then - I promise you , Once you experience Marlin screaming out the Tiagra , you wont stop thinking of your own boat.
Then you may like to try some competitions and so on.
For sure - go and try more charters before you think of boat. Join the club as Willem suggested, it may be a better way for you to get more boat time.

- Many that was partying previous night and barley can hold rod. Not to mention coming late as alarm did not wake them up - lost many hours waiting for others to arrive.

- Those that will lie on deck floor in front of your legs sea sick and crying to be taken back[/*]
- I nearly escaped two heavy sinkers flying in my face[/*]
- I was hooked on the jacket and once on my hand by anglers next to me
[/*] - Constant tangling on the drift with others and spending long time untangling [/*]
- Often found Rusted hooks on Charter tackle that you really don't want to get hooked on[/*]
- Blocked with my hand sea barbel flying in my face due to inexperienced angler next to me. I was so lucky that time...... got a tiny scratch by spike and that pain was to be remembered but escaped getting it in face

Gee thanks for the sober truth of what to be aware of I think you just made up my mind, I think I will be getting my own boat but not right now,I will be trying to gain as much knowledge and experience in the next 2 years by joining a club and using charters, as well as my skippers and hopefully by then will be able to make a descent desision on a boat, as it is I'm very cautious by nature and will not take kindly to a skipper endangering me, I also do like the idea of doing my own thing I will just have to go often enough to justify the boat and that is not a bad thing, thank you all for the input and advice I really appreciate it.

My Opinnion, Charter the boat rather than to share!Big no no! Cost a bit more but you dont have the "kak" as explained in DS brief!
You seriously get wild cowboys in the surf, showofs ! Safety must come first no matter what to your crew onboard, no monkey stuff!

When you get more serious, owning your own boat allows you to decide what you target, where you fish etc. Its not only about cost of the fishing trip. If your not serious and just want to get out, rather charter. Owning a boat is not only about the purchase price. Altimayely rather find a friend with a boat...
