Not something I have done but will surely do if I change my current transducer.
Get a proper piece of wood like meranti that can handle water you will have to shape the back to the contour of where you want to mount it and use something like sikaflex to glue it down. This will give you a flat surface you can drill holes in and mount the transducer without drilling holes n the hull.
And trust be if you use the correct sikaflex be ready that it will be there forever that stuff does not come loose.

I have been toying with the idea of using Sikaflex to fit it to the hull, but had to confirm if you guys share the same sentiment.
Strange there is not much info on the net doing it this way. All I came across was what is called the "stern saver". The rest of the search resulted only in "in-hull" applications which I am not fond of.

If it has a rear boarding step I have a stainless bracket to mount it to the step.Its actually for mounting a bilge pump but works great for a transducer also. If not Epoxy some thick nylon to the hull. I thick its called hdpe. Maizey plastics sell it. (the stuff Garrick Plugs are made from) Then screw to that with stainless steel screws. Do not mount in hull. Personally though I would just screw into the hull and use Sikaflex 291 to seal. Then add an extra manual electric bilge pump as extra security in case water enters the hull from anywhere.
