Hi all Looking for an 8ft cast net in great condition (ie 16ft overall diameter). Must be lead weights and net mesh in either 3/8 or 1/2 inch size. Either nylon or mono. Please let me know what you have? Many thanks Last edited on Tue Jan 28th, 2020 02:33 pm by Magnum001 |

Hi Magnum001, The regulations state that a cast net may not be large than 2 m in length or 4 meters diameter.

Hi Guppigetta Thanks for the heads-up although I don't believe that's a regulation in the Western Cape, we're a little luckier....have you seen the speed our mullet move at! Although to be honest I do stand to be corrected, if necessary....! So still looking, what have you all got? Thanks Last edited on Tue Jan 28th, 2020 06:40 pm by Magnum001 |

"CAST NET Species that may be caught with a Cast-net. The taxa, i.e. genus (denoted “spp.”), or family, mentioned in Table 1 refer to all species in the genus or family,as the case may be. The holder of a recreational fishing permit endorsed for cast-netting shall only utilize a circular net weighted at the circumference for thepurpose of casting and not exceeding six meters in diameter"

Hi Halibut Hoffman, The Marine and Recreation Brochure 2016/2017 states under heading Recreation fishing paragraph 5 "cast net not larger than 2 meters length or 4 meters diameter". Can you please tell me where this other regulation you mentioned is, because I seem to be in the dark with this one?

this the 2018 regulations, can't find a more recent one.. "5)The holder of a recreational fishing permit, endorsed for cast-netting, is entitled to catch fish listed in Table 1 with a cast-net, which is a circular net weightedat the circumference for the purpose of casting, not exceeding 6 m in diameter. Specific cast-netting regulations are listed below in sub-regulations 14and 15." https://www.nda.agric.za/doaDev/sideMenu/fisheries/21_HotIssues/April2010/Recreational%20Brochure%202017-18.pdf https://www.daff.gov.za/daffweb3/Branches/Fisheries-Management/Marine-Resource-Management/Recreational-Fishing Ja was previously 4m in diameter max, now 6m. Also thought it was 4m until checking.. Last edited on Wed Jan 29th, 2020 08:37 am by Dr halibut hoffman |

Thanks for clearing this up Dr Halibut, I was fairly certain a mere 8ft net wasn't going to land me in trouble! In any event still looking - please let me know what you have? Thanks

If you can cast a net very well then it's not necessary for a 8foot one..with my 6ft one I cast so it opens up like a pan cake and catch plenty mullet.

Thanks Tackle Addiction I'm in touch with both, the 8ft is more difficult to find - basically the ru**ish Adrenalin version or Jarvis Walker (with wrong mesh size for mullet under say 175mm). I'd prefer a better quality - shimano vs Okuma if you will...... I cast like that too, mostly! And catch lots, but I'm just looking to master this craft better, and throw less often if that makes sense? Cheers ![]()

For little mullet a rope and a 5little water bottle adapted, and a few rocks inside, some cable tie or some old fishing line to put it together and chum and patience...I used to stay on sandvlei and no castnetting allowed so one makes a plan..the little guys they are easy..with a string of 12/0 hooks and a bass rod and little balls of bread for the hook tips and for chum, and an old pillie, i'd fill you a bucket in no time.. I struggle getting bait sometimes, sometimes its easy, i take bass rod and thrownet along and chum, sometimes takes me five minutes, sometimes you score with mackerel or maasbanker that a net would never get, sometimes one lucky throw on a shoal sorts your night out for you, sometimes they are impossible! You'd be suprised what pitches up in the chum trail, i been pulling and releasing baby poensies, crackers, romans, all sorts..same gulleys I catch a livebait in sometimes, if you spend enough time there you would have seen gamefish coralling bait in the same gulley, GW's doing donuts waiting for you to fall in..with a hook getting bait is half the fun..but sometimes it just takes one good throw and you're in..but for little guys trap em? If I had 8 hours spare a day to practice throwing a net, I'd throw the net in a bucket and just fish more.. ![]() Last edited on Tue Feb 4th, 2020 08:32 pm by Dr halibut hoffman |

Yes well....maybe just in-between the sun-up and then the dusk session when the fishing is best! Gives you something to do on holiday... On a related note is anybody else willing to admit that prawn pumping might be slightly addictive....I think we'll run out, or just five more, or another super-large one before we go....
