Hi guys. I’m looking to get a 12-13 ft grinder rod that can cast a
5oz.
Here are my options:
Adrenaline Triple X
Penn Regiment 12,6
Loomis Shockwave HMG
Okuma Azores

Any feedback would be appreciated. Please list alternative options.

Metaloid 13.6 is a decent option. Affordable and comes with decent components as standard. Others in your list have been known to have issues with the guides etc.

Been fishing with the regiment 12vt6 and 13vt6 for the last year. The 12vt6 is a perfect scratching rod and casts a 4oz with ease. It has great back bone and is lekker for reef fish. I fish it with a biomaster 6000 with 20lb braid

The 13vt6 casts a 5oz. Its a great scratching rod but lacks the pulling power you would want if you casting a live mullet or makkie head for small sharks. I fish it with a spinfisher 7500 with 30lb braid. Soft tip is perfect for gallies and steenies and casts a mile.

Some advise...depends on how regularly you are going to use it or how much abuse it will take, I wont go to cheap...will only cause headaches!

Have a look at the Okuma G-Force 12ft (not the telescopic one) or the BAT Carp Zone 12ft both are good value for money imo.

My son got a Regiment 13.6ft for his 11th birthday and he really likes it...in fact I also want to get myself one. The Shockwave did feel good when I picked it up in the shop, but that is as far as my "experience" go with that one

Not sure? But he is on the tall side for a 10 year old

Stefan001 can you cast a 5oz with confidence when using the 12.6?

Has he fished with a 12 or 13ft rod yet?

His height and upper body strength will play a role in selecting a rod. The cheap rods are not light and the light rods are not cheap and I'm talking about actual weight of the rod, not casting weight.

A good thing to do is take him shopping so he can get a feel for rod. Wanting a 12 or 13ft rod for a 10 year old who is taller than the average is just not the way to go about buying rod. Find a rod that suits him perfectly in terms of height and build and the way to do this is take him to the tackle store as a start.

An even better way is borrow a few rods from your mates and take him casting. Some tackle shops might let you cast/loan the rod so check with you local store.

He has used one of my 12ft rods, but only casts a 3oz and it’s a issue fishing in currents! He has a nice 9ft rod that he casts well, but when we fish the surf we will cast for him.

I fish a double hook trace with the 12vt6 with a four ounce. It will cast a small worm or prawn bait with a 5oz.
I used to fish with an Assassin edge 12vt. Bit of a stiffer rod that cast a 5oz.

What reel are you going to pair with the rod? Ive been using a 6000 Biomaster with 30lb pound and a Socorro 6000 with thinner 25lb (Casts a dream).
