Groete,
Spook

The Romans are very territorial, so once they are removed from an area, they are pretty much gone, until new smaller fish arrive and take their place. Hence, the only places that still hold a few that are accessible from shore, are places with very low angling pressure, such as private land along the coast with very few visitors, or high cliff that nobody is brave enough to climb down. You also need to look for places where there is a reef in fairly deep water, as the reds are more of a deep sea species.

Good luck in finding such a spot, and keep it hush hush.

About 40 years ago they were a common catch off the right hand side of Fishhoek off the rocks. I wonder when the last time a Roman came out from that spot.

Ja you need access to deep water and conditions that bring them against the side, like ahead of an upwell.. When they are dik you cant catch anything else, they are on the bait so quickly. They are resident, I know of a guy that has caught the same roman at the same spot, that he tagged, 5 times already or something ridiculous..

I used to fish off the tsitsikamma cliffs, some spots there you cant catch anything else, aside from wawielle daggarad and and.. it is like deep sea fishing from the side with stocks like they used to be..throw for throw red roman..your bait does not even hit the ground..

Ek self is mal oor Roman vang.... Groot oupa romanne met geel tande.... N pragtige vis... Baklei lekker stamp stamp so en heerlike eetvis saam wyn in oond.... Van kant redelik vollop in winter maande... Vrot rooiaas... Seekat.... Tjokka... Sardyn....

Swak sinker strop is n goeie tip.... As hy eers in sy grot in duik is hy weg.. Trek hom vinnig voor hy dit doen... Haal daai binne goed dadelik uit... Sy pens gaan gou af....

Ja from the side romans are dirty fighters, going for every cave they can on the way in..But when you get stuck just wait, they generally swim free again.

Dankie vir die wenke manne. Ja n roman is my "bucket list" spesie. Het so paar jaar gelede een by n vismark gekoop en hy was bleddie lekker. Sal nog lekkerder wees as ek hom self kon vang.

Wow, that indeed is lovely Roman.

In the seventies there when I was into spearfishing and explored the whole western cape coast, we found Roman everywhere, from Cape Point, Smitswinkel Bay right around the coast stretching right up to Arniston. There was a spot along Clarence Drive where they were plentiful...here but in deep water the odd red steenbras sometimes. There were many deep water caves which they inhabited.

Sadly this was abused by some spearos and I blame these types that abused this sport...when I think back and in hind sight limits should have been strictly enforced, especially reef fish.
