An incident occured in False Bay on the weekend, where by fishermen actively fished for sharks amongst bathers and ignored all requests to stop.
This matter has now been brought to the attention of the city council.

Alison Kock, marine biologist for the Save Our Seas Shark Centre explains:

"This is indeed a major conflict of interest. In parts of the US they have managed to ban shark fishing at beaches like this for the reason that it does pose a risk to swimmers and surfers in the vicinity, especially if they are using live bait (like in a lot of cases) which can stimulate sharks. I will liaise with Gregg Oelofse from the City to discuss what options we have for managing this and report back if I make any progress or have any news."

First of all this weekend...for you who stay in Cape Town surely remember that there

WAS A STORM WITH STRONG WIND AND RAIN

So who was these people 'bathing' ? And which beach?

What are you supposed to do at a "Recreational Beach"? I was under the impression fishing is also "recreational"???

The matter has been put to the scientists, and they have approached the city council, so expect a formal response soon. This can easily be cleared up.

I wonder wot they'll do at Melkbos slip???

The scientists (man i got plenty faith in those) have to decide, and the recreational angler will probably have to bend over again.

I feel if it's a public beach one should be allowed to do ANYTHING one is legally allowed to do on a public beach.

If i go fishing and the guys are there first jetskiing or kiteboarding, i don't demand they leave. I go.

I wonder how far away you are allowed to fish in the opinion of these guys.

A policeman will have a very hard time telling me what i am doing illegally so that i have to stop fishing at a certain spot if it's a public beach. Very hard time indeed. Reckless endangerment is the only thing i can think off, and for that they would have to prove that a) the bait did attract sharks, b)it attracted a species that was a known attacker of bathers in the area, and C) that the fish would have attacked the bathers. beyond a reasonable doubt.

I can smell some wrongful arrest suits in the pipeline...

You will have to legally define shark fishing first, this is such a load of horse excrement. Hopefully it is a rumour. Sharks we fish for around Cape Town don't attack people in any case. And those that do attack people and are illegal to fish for are probably very well attracted to people splashing around on surfboards.

Pylstert, you welcome to advise Alison Kock, a marine biologist for the 'Save Our Seas Shark Centre' on your findings of what sharks are atrracted by your bait.
Her view carries a masters degree with it and is already on the desk of Gregg Oelofse

The beaches we fish 4 sharks are hardly swimming friendly beaches 1st of all. I can understand that putting a slide out at fishoek or surfers corner is not the right thing to do. But strandfontein and macs is hardly a swimming beach. The fisherman far outnumber swimming owes anyway for 90% of the year. 2nd of all,we dont fish these areas to attract sharks 4rm other areas.they are generaly there anyway surely? These sharks r patroling these waters constantly. Respect 4 others shud b the guideline. If there r bathers dont slide nextdoor 2them. Theres plenty other spots 2 fish.

Here in the Strand, there is a closed section at a sertain time of the year where no fishing is allowed between sertain times on the main swimming area.
