Hi Guys,

I need some advice (again) on this one as it is not something that I have even looked into for myself.

My father in law loves fishing, but he is absolutely useless with a multiplier.

Even if I cast from him and hand him the rod, he still manages a tangle somehow, BUT, he is a wonderfull guy and I seriously want to help him.

Problem is, he is always stuck fishing the gullies and or bays with a small bass rod setup for shad, blacktail etc. Nothing wrong with that, but he wants to go to Namibia and join us in Maphelane next year and he now wants to get a bigger rod to target some of the larger eds and maybe some small in-eds.

I was thinking of something in the 12 -14 ft range, with a nice grinder that can take up to 4 oz? Don't know if there is such a combo?

Any advice appreciated...

::slr:::thankie

Eish Forgot to add.

His budget is between R 1400 and R 1800 for the rod and reel.

Thx

Daiwaa Opus 6000 + and Kingfisher Stimulator 12 and 3 quarter, very good setup, very cheap and I am sure he will get into some big eds and land them comfortably!

Hi WalkersKiller,

Is that the regular stimulator or a dedicated spinning one?

I have a regular, but did know there were ones with bigger eyes fro Grinders?

Hi Strandloper

Have a look at the sensation shad pro 12 ft
Pair wit a 6000 or 8000 reel with some braid you/he should be fine .Cast from 2 - 4 oz can be used with large spoons/plugs from the surf as well.A BG 60 will be a good reel to ad to the rod

With the shad pro the real seat is fearly large just make sure that what ever reel you take that you do a test fit in the store so that you dont end up with a reel that is/sits loose on the rod I have that problem with the Shimano Alivio 6500

I'd go for a daiwa exceller oceano and put it on a kingfisher trident 12ft, 4-5oz spinning rod. My dad uses it for in-eds as well as edible fishing. Its a nice in between and should fit your budget

Its the spinning Stimulator, you are looking at about R1000 for the rod and then between 450 and 50 for the opus +, all my biggest fish were caught on that setup and I think its quality! The trident, as Aqua mentioned, is also a good option to look at!

My 2 cents worth: Kingfisher Trident 12 foot spinning rod, coupled with the indestructable  Penn SSM 850 (not the graphite one - SSG) and you will be able to handle even big edibles. 3 to 4 oz casting absolutely no problem.

HI Gerhard,

Bought a lot of gear from him when he had Angling Africa, have only been to his new shop ac ouple of times, but has some nice gear there.

Seems as if the Trident is liked by quite a few...

AD,

I must admit, I don't know it, is it a 3 piece?

At that price, I might get him to spend a bit more on the reel and make sure that he get's something that can take everything that he and mother nature throws at it!

Yup, 3 pieces. At 4ft a piece it disappears in the cars boot. A decent grinder loaded with braid should handle 99.9% of edibles. When scratching i pair it with my spheros 6000 loaded with 50lb whiplash, even a half-arsed cast goes far enough
