:SSS......Morning sunshine's,

Here's what I would like to know, the anglers you see on ESA,Heir gaan ons alweer,Blackfin etc,do these guys have a day job or is fishing all they do?

If they have got day jobs what is it they do?

And if fishing is there job,how does one get to do what they do,and fish all day?

Esa guy's work on artical's for the mag normal office work etc, but get pay'd to fish and test new tackle... And some might have other busineses runing for them

I knw Rob and Wes are specimen colector's for Ushaka etc, and do promotion for Shimano and other brand's..

Gerhard Laubcher has this own Flyfishing guiding company Flycast Away's and do trip's to Cosmolido's, NewZealand etc..(hard work and work hard for it)*respect to him*

Craig Thomas run's his own lodge in Moz...

Most of the guy's we see on the TV have more than one buziness, bring in money for them to feed their fishing adiction...

Wayne I had to rev them. There is an inside joke at our offices because the "pro anglers" complain how hard it is going on long shoots and trying to get content when conditions are poo.

The rest of the gang accuses them of being on a permanent holiday.

In all honesty though I can say that for the ESA guys they do other work e.g. Ray handles membership, some organise events, Mark is a professional nose-picker (just kidding Mark), the bass guys Rob n Howie also do other work including all our web stuff.

I SHOULD spend more time fishing but also juggle running my own company with ESA work.

Am sure its much the same for the other fishing shows - have to do other work to keep things going...

I think that fishing for a living is very hard work. You have to produce the goods or half the country will think you can't fish. Remember that these guys are public figures and when they go fishing they are watched by everyone. They attract people and how many of us ever complained that "our" spot was too crowded or that "this guy just parked on my spot right next to me"? Imagine you want to go for a quick cast and everyone is watching you or maybe you try out something new and it don't work? People are nasty and they will say you don't deserve to be on ESA etc. I would not mind fishing everyday but to do it for a popular show like ESA or Blackfin and be scrutinised the whole time ..... never!

I would love all the sponsorships, vehicles and free tackle to play with ,but, I dont want the job. All the negative comments about ESA in the past, just aint worth it. Too difficult to please everybody.

Different strokes for different folks.

They are never going to become Millionaires in the work they do but they get to fish a lot and obviously where possible suplement their income.

Hennie Papenfuss for example is a guy working his arse to the bone:

BFS DVD's, Fish Magazine, BFS Tours and they have just got a large charter boat for the east coast with a full time skipper and cheff

They are not all sponsored with fishing tackle, some tackl but they have to buy as well.

MR. POSITIVE   ...   the man of kind words and wisdom.  :fbash

As far as fishing every day being a jol. Have any of you tried to turn your hobby into your work? I have done it and trust me it absolutely takes the thrill away. Too much of a good thing can make it boring. We all say we would love to fish for a living ....  try it for 3 or 4 years and then tell me you still have the same passion to go social fishing on a weekend like you used to.

Spot on Misguide

When you have to produce and your months income depends on the fish biting and all that other jazz along with it then no ways can the spark be kept alive.

There are Pros and Cons...

Pros ::S

·         Getting to test and play with a lot of different tackle and baits etc

·         Fishing more than once a week (the biggest Pro)

·         Fishing different destinations and new water

·         Having people think you are an expert just because you are on TV

·         Doing school visits and whipping the kids into frenzy and then leaving for the teacher to try and control the kids afterwards.

·         Helping to promote fishing in general and building relations between different factions.

·         Getting sponsored stuff like watches, sunglasses and stuff.

Cons :(

·         Having to get fish and perform every time

·         Being forced to fish with sponsors only stuff

·         Trying to organise cameramen and the weather

·         Having a cameraman on your boat getting in the way

·         Waiting to strike while the cameraman is fumbling for his camera

·         Asking the cameraman if he got that top water strike and finding out he didn’t.

·         Filming for 2 days and finding out that the two days filming can’t be used because the cameraman had the date and time stamp turned on.

·         Thinking you got an awesome show only to find the editor cut out the stuff you thought was awesome.

And both Howie and I have jobs... Howie is a sparkie and I run a software development company.
