Hey guys, i remember a while back there was a thread on using sand sharks as bait. Only problem is that i have never actively targeted them and would like to know what i should do and where i should look. Seems that there are a few in the gonubie river and that it would be the logical place to try. Just want to know, where should i try in the river? Near the mouth, on banks or deeper channels? Will be using my 7' kingfisher hornet with a penn sargus 3000 and 12lb fireline. Tackle ok? I know the bag limit is one per day, but will do this as a sideline while targeting kob and grunter. Any guidelines guys? Thanks

Here on the WESKUS..we got sandies that are on steroids...
I use live harders, the small ones..5-6cm long..they work great..also prawn..I would throw the around the shallow banks and near the mouth...hope this helps..good luck...

I've found the best way to catch a sandy is to try and catch an edible eg. cob or steenbras on the surf, prawn works well lol. Serously though I have caught plenty of them on sandbanks, especially flats or shallow banks.

Any well presented bait will produce sandy's - target them to the right of the mouth on that sand bar , look for working sand as u would for eds .
flick out half a sard on those banks and u'l have heaps of fun on the light stick.

Crabbs, aren't you referring to the Giant Guitarfish as opposed to the Lesser Sandshark? The Lesser Sandshark averages 2 - 6 kg's, whereas the Giant Guitarfish reaches in excess of 120 kg's. I would not use a live pinkie when targetting Sandies (Lesser Sandsharks), but rather a small live mullet.

As mentioned, have a look at the ESA magazine. Any soft bait will work, sardine belly, chokka, sard/chokka combo, mackeral cutlets, prawn, small mullet, small mullet head, etc. I've found that a 4/0 hook with a sliding skelm 2/0 hook works wonders.

Yeah...I was referring to giant guitarfish. Caught a few from north pier DBN in my early days. Biggest one required 4 guys to help land it. Caught it on a coffee grinder.
