Black rock and Lala Neck

Hi Gents,

We're heading back to Zululand in Feb for a week and i need some advice. I've fished Banga Neck and Dogpoint extensively but not these two spots. We're fishing from Dark moon spring tide for a week. Any advise on whether these spots fish well on a springtide? Which tides are best incoming or outgoing? Anything to look out for? Any advice would be great.

Tks.

Sorry just to add to that, we are thinking of staying at Mqobela camp, is see that there is some info on the site but has anyone staying there recently. Can you recommend it, any crime issues? Tks.

I have stayed at Mqobela in Sep 2009 in one of their chalets.

Accomodation is a bit rugged and I hope you don't mind bats in your chalet :).

We did not have any crime issues although the gillies was a bit of a nuisance.

We did not do any serious fishing.

Mqobela is a good location for visiting places like Black rock, Rocktail bay etc.

We had two chalets.

The freezer is operated as a freezer or fridge as they add one burner to it for a fridge, and add an additional one to turn it into a freezer (It is actually one of those big flat freezers). Our chalet the fridge was to cold and eventually started freezing the beers. In the other is chalet it was working fine.

We had 2 plate gas stove. Ours worked perfectly where in the other chalet you could not adjust the heat setting.

Our chalets there were no power or water, only a tap close by, and it was serviced daily.

To be honest the ablution facilities are not too great, but did not bother me too much. They do try to keep it clean.

The hosts and staff are very helpful and friendly and they would accommodate you to the best of their abilities.

I will go back there again, but would rather make it a boys fishing holiday and leave the wife at home ::S.

Stav, went to Mqobela camp a number of times. Very rugged indeed. The owner Albert used to stay on the premises but now resides in Manguzi. Never had any crime issues there. Apart from Lucky the 'day manager' theres also a night guard patrolling at night (obviously). It gets awefully hot there in Feb. If you are on top of Black Rock at 12:00 youre gonna be dead at 2.

Rather go to the parking and have a few beers with a braai. Black Rock has a beautiful bay with a variety of species. Me and a bud caught needle scales, shad, kingies, blacktails, slinkys, wave garricks and even a cuttle fish and a type of sole (yep!). Best minnows were 2 and 3 inch in goldfish, Arkansas shiner and Blue Pearl. Retrieves varied. Take snorkel gear along and have a look there.

We stayed there a good few years back. Very rugged but good enough if fishing is the main objective.

We had terrible weather, but saw some GIANT GTs! I had fish come past me in knee deep water on the point. They would chase baitfish almost onto the beach. We just started dropshotting so we were hopeless.

The owner told us that dark spring is the best time for geets. You will hook some, landing them is a different story. There's a ledge on the outside of the point and the big fish cut you off very quickly. Or that's what the owner told us. So take proper tackle!

He also said that you should start fishing an hour before sunrise, which is difficult since the gate only opens at 6 (well, when we went). Be sure to get your permits for BR for each day before you go. I think the lodge can get these for you.

Be sure to spend a day at Rocktail bay, absolutely stunning!
