An archival photo of the famous "Cojimar Specimen", a large White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) caught off Cuba in 1945 that was said to measure 21 feet (6.4 m) and weigh about 7,100 lbs (3,220 kg).  Sometimes, this weight is given as "7,302 pounds" (3,312 kg), but — in truth — this shark was never weighed.  The length of this shark has been questioned, too.  From the photo, the shark looks about 16 feet (5 m) long — that's still awfully BIG, but a long way short of 21 feet!.  The weight of large White Sharks is highly variable at a given length, so it is difficult to estimate the mass of such a beast.

Hemps,

Reefman recently posted the SASAA tables somewhere on this site, and if thats still valid I think the largest was a white shark of 400kg caught by M.R.Geerts in 1954 somewhere in Natal.

Check out the catch records at: http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=2341&forum_id=43

Visbaai” was a popular shark catching spot. It was a very popular form of entertainment and everyone would gather to watch. This activity was specially made popular by Bill Selkirk, also known as the “shark enemy” of the world. He caught a world record shark in April 1922. It took him 53/4 hours and 1 kilometre up and down the rocks between the Old Harbour and the Marine pool to land this shark. Selkirk, more than anybody else, put Hermanus on the world’s fishing map. He had a great sense of adventure, probably a characteristic he inherited from one of his forefathers, Alexander Selkirk (better known as Robinson Crusoe!). The jaws of this world record shark is also on display in the Selkirk Room of the De Wet’s Huis Photographic Museum.

In April 1922, Bill caught his record man-eating shark of 2,176 lbs (967 kg) which took him five hours to land. In 1969, Coena Haman gave a vivid description of this drama to a visiting reporter of Die Burger newspaper.

'It was at 12:30 that day when the news came of sharks in the harbour. Bill and I went to Frans-se-klip, the rock in the harbour from where he caught the other sharks. We could see it at once. It was huge. Bill immediately put out the two paraffin tins with kabeljou as bait. The shark disappeared, after a while came back, took the bait and tore away with it. The bamboo rod bent under the strain while the line whirred through the reel.

Bill was all concentration while a crowd collected. It was a titanic fight as the shark made Bill run across the rocks to the harbour. Across Piet-se-klip while man and shark were fighting each other, Selkirk had to draw on all his skills to tire out the monster and keep it from breaking the line on the reefs. The fight continued until seven that evening when he, with aching back and arms, at last had the shark on the sand. It was the largest fish to this day, caught by rod and line from the rocks. The huge shark was claimed as a world record, but this was contested because, it was said, he had used a float. According to the rules, floats were not allowed.'

The story sounds really "fishy" to me. How would anybody land sutch a huge shark on the beach? Im sure that a large white like that woud destroy any equipment avaliable today, never mind what was around in 1945!
The biggest one I have seen landed with surf tackle was at the old whaling station at park rennie(near sctties)in the late 70's.I have no idea what it would have tipped the scales at but it was huge.At a guess I would say 12ft female.

There's an old photo I saw 10 years ago at the Mazeppa Bay hotel of what looks like a large white shark or dusky with 4 grown men sitting on it caught with 5kg of whale meat.

I know Reg Harrison also landed a monster White off South Pier, DBN, at the old whaling station on whale meat, back in the 50's. I'll see if i can find the size somewhere

The Largest "Official" Capture of a Shark from Terra Firma is a Great White taken off South Pier in 1953 by Reg Harrison... it weighed 1660 lbs ( 753 Kilos ) and was caught on a Bamboo rod, 18 cord Flax line, and a centre pin Scarabourgh style reel, with no drag, only a leather palm pad...
This is still considered the largest fish/shark ever taken from terra firma by a single angle on conventional tackle....

what about the old monsters caught during the whaling days on lumps of whale blubber on south pier in durbs??

the 1940's to early 1970's were particularly productive from what i've read and if i remember correctly. the guys would coil the line up on the pier....swing the bait and lob it out. There's one particular photo that comes to mind of a guy sitting on his rod to achor it down, cane rod bending like a bow and a determination on the anglers face that can only mean he knows he's on with an absolute beast. gotta love those old scarboroughs...just because of the history and the charm of fighting using 1-1 ratio, i use a scarborough whenever i can.

the guys use to land those beasts at the base of south pier, on the first beach...usually countless hours later. they usually consisted of big duskies, the odd great white and tiger and at a certain time of year they use to nail the biggest hammers i've ever seen. nothing like we experience today!

Guiness will probably have Alf Deans Official World Record in there.... Not Reg's or the other one.. Officially its the world record as it was caught on 130lb test tackle, not higher... weighed 2664 lbs and took only 50 minutes to land off the boat ( which makes me doubt the tackle! )

Caught in 1959... measured 16ft 10 inches.... caught off Ceduna in Oz...

OFF THE ESPN SITE
Biggest record fish
On April 21, 1959, Alfred Dean caught a 2,664-pound great white shark off the coast of south Australia. Amazingly, he subdued this monster — the heaviest record fish ever listed by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) — in only 50 minutes on 130-pound line. Dean also caught great whites weighing 2,333 and 2,536 pounds.

Weighing in at nearly 3 tons, this Florida manta ray may be the biggest fish ever hooked and landed.
What may be the largest fish ever hooked and landed is described in "Fishes and Fishing in Louisiana" by James Gowanloch (1933). Gowanloch tells how Captain Jay Gould captured a manta ray that measured 19 feet, 9 inches from wing-tip to wing-tip.

the ray was from a boat... the article goes on to say "The ray was hooked on a large shark hook on 1,200 feet of 1/2-inch rope, and when it had been subdued and towed back to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., the city's 20-ton crane had to be used to lift the fish from the water, after the chain hoists on three smaller cranes were stripped in trying to bring it up. The manta ray's weight was estimated at 5,500 pounds."

Soooo not quite the right forum if it is only land based fishing

Well two years ago fishing of Kings Beach in Port Elizabeth with my six foot Pick and Pay rod coffee grinder 2kg line and a prawn as bait I hooked a great white and fought it for 36 hours before landing a monster of 3576pounds. It took six guys to gaff it - Unfortuanately I don't have any pictures of the monster
