Howzit gents

Have any of you watched this DVD.  I spent R200 on the two disc edition expecting to find insightful (if not unique) information, good footage, and some of the spyker magic that makes us all yearn for the skills of the man and time on the sand in Henties.

Without pre-empting what others think, hence this poll, to say I was bitterly disappointed is an understatement, as it contained substantial portions of sponsor talk, soundless (and old) footage, little "inside information" but lots of general information that has little or nothing to do with Henties but rather fishing in general (and which I could find, at no cost, much better on Sealine or a basic book, eg standard variety baits and knots) and, ultimately, what came across as a beefed up home video on the whole still poorly made.

Now,  before I get lynched, let me acknowledge the following:

1.   Spyker is like the Madiba of the fishing world - legendary, and I dont think less of his talent because of the DVD.   My views are therefore not meant to insult or defame, but merely conveying my personal, constructive and honest feelings;

2.  DVD's, like any movies/entertainment, are are a matter of personal taste.  Some might love it, but I did not;

2.  Novice fisherman might find the DVD's worthwhile.  On the other hand, even an experienced angler would expect to find more than the odd bit of useful information, and I would regard myself as somewhere in the middle fishing in the Cape.  I am not alone in my views, as I let some friends watch it as well, and to quote one summing up the rest, he "did not even bother to watch the first disc to the end";

Your honest, and considerate, views please?

Oooh..... u just threw the cat amongst the pigeons mate!

I personally haven't seen the dvd yet..but i have taken the following stance to dvds in general..i would rather take my hard earned 200 bucks and pay my annual club fee where my senior club members would rather give up their own personal time and valuable insider tips to coach me and address my individual needs...this i find more insightfull and off greater value to me rather than watchin 90min off general fishing talk..remember no pro will dish out his secrets on a dvd no matter how good they are! As for dvd's? They not made for fun, they made for financial gain..so business rule off thumb applies.."least amount off info put in + fancy marketing =highest turnover" then u get the same silly person who bought the dvd booking a trip on the guided tour because he wants to meet his hero who landed the big shark! Might as well get schalk burger making dvds!

But hey this just my opinion!

Zeebo,

I think you have it totally wrong, this DVD has loads of useful info, love it especially when he says - "quick tip guys" Not to mention the footage from YEARS ago, and best of all was that song, you were then singing that number whole week!

Likening him to Madiba? ...eish, I don't know so much.

Sure, he is a good fisherman, but not much else that sets him apart from other good fisherman other than the fact that he is a good fisherman who has a whole lot more time on his hands to fish than the vast majority of us. More time with bait in water = more fish than the rest, simple as that.

How's that for a cat in amongst the pigeons? :spite

200 bucks is quite a lot to spend listening to a song..thats about all that will stick in the viewers mind...
Then offcourse there is the fact that i wont be fishing in namibian waters on a monthly basis...i rather watch something that was made about my local waters...

I agree on it not being very good. More advertising than anything else.
The Angling with Blackfin(Rapsons & Co.) series is way better. Really excellent quality, etc. for the 1st one in the series. Can/t wait for the next one which will be released shortly.

i fully agree with the master assasin, you tend to learn so much more from a "toppie" on the beach who's been fishing up and down our coastline since he jumpt off the titanic... also it's best to get info about your local spot while fishing there so guy's can piont out specific characteristics about that particular area...i have watched the spyker dvd - not imprest but did get 1 or 2 handy tips...my 1c worth (soory inflation has gotten the better of me)

watched the one in transkei, what a lot of money making grap.

i dont care who spyker is but if you want to sell a dvd to the public to make money then give us our money's worth!

DVD was lent to us by one of our customers, he then wants to know if the fishing in transkei is worth the trip, this coming from a novice, so what is the dvd teaching them?

Bought the Transkei 2 DVD . Worst of all the fishing DVD's I own . After watching the Blackfin DVD , everything else is second rate - those oke know how to make a DVD. The only entertaining part to the Transkei 2 DVD was the rescue mission to get 2 guys out of the water that had been washed of with a freak wave . And gaffing of sharks ............ a definite no no.

there is an old afrikaans saying 'elke brommer op sy drol', these guys might be excellent fisherman but tried to broaden their horizons, some of them have been making DVD's for years and used to good footage, maybe our expectation has outgrown these guys over the last 2 years, since we have been exposed to other people and producers, with guys like ESA and Blackfin these older generation has not kept up with what the public wants. Maybe somebody should take on to themselves and send them an e-mail with constructive criticism. I haven't seen the DVD so it won't be me.

I have seen the Blackfin DVD, actually bought them and have learn some from it, but agree with some threads above, you can learn alot more from a toppie on the beach.

secondly I would like to add. I support local guys trying to make an effort and do what they love most, therefore I don't mind buying the DVD if is crap I will let them know with constructive criticism, if the respond I will buy the next release if they don't I will never support them again. Like I said I will buy the DVD, I will not borrow a DVD and watch it, or get a copied DVD from a buddy. you can call it piracy but I just call it is being not right. sure watch a copy made from one of the big concerns, but these are our local guys trying to make a living.

Unfortunatly I wasted my money on the Angola DVD.  Won't recommend it at all, unless you would like to have a full detailed report of the trip they had to Angola. With the trip I mean the drive there. About half of the DVD is their trip to the place, very little fishing and 1 bait. That is basicly the DVD. Sorry I forgot the Advertisments. They can't say anything without mentioning a sponsor. The Bait demo is an basic fish head bait.

I have bought my last Screaming Reels DVD. I will only support Black fin and BFS.

It's our fault , we complain , but do nothing...do what the rest of of the nation does..

Boycott!!!!! every single piece of crap that is sold and the people who sell sponsered crap to  us poor sods..its there fault, thats why they have buyers...they should

check what they are buying before they sell crap , or at least warn us..and that applies to second rate service , and inflated prices.....

My cents worth

there goes the hot air balooooons again on this site.

guys please ....the thing that makes me laaf about this site is that half the guys(includin myself) are novices yet they are the first to jump and critisise dvds. just remember that before the dvds were around....url had nothing to watch and most of url know wat url know frm watchin the dvds

first url started with esa and now url nailing this 1. i personally have them and think they good. i might never get to fish namib ...so atleast i got to see it on dvd. and stop actin so discusted about gaffin sharks(not that i am for it) but pls stop tryin to be such an enviromentelist were url might do the same in that situation.

so pls stop pumpin urls mouth cos half of u dont knw wat url talkin about....lets support all the s.a dvds wether informative or not

hennie..esa....spyker...blackfin ....all are good and since most of url are novices....watch wat url can and learn and appreciate viewing our coastline cos there will be many places shown on those dvds that url will never see.

say wat url want to me about wat i had to say....i give a sh!t

I will support all fishing DVD's as I'm in love with the sport.  For that reason I get Hennie's, Blackfin's and ESA's DVD's every month, but will not buy another Screaming reels DVD.

The main reason for this is because it is no almost fishing, but an advertesment for Western Accessories.  My opinion is that you don't want to pay R99 just to see what new stuff is available at WA.  Ads should be free.

I'm more than willing to pay for any DVD on fishing aslong as it is fishing and fishing tips.

If you pay for something and it does not meet you expectations, then you are entitled to complain. problem is, Sealine is not the place to do it, however posting issues like this on Sealine creates awareness and warns other members.

producers go out an make DVD's without keeping in mind what the public want or expects.

this does not take away the fact that they are excellent fisherman, but like I said in my earlier posting, doesn't mean they can make video's.

I got Screamin reels in hentjies bay ,,disc one was not working properly ,returned and got another one ,the production company seems like the have a low budget which is in total contrast to Big fish safari-these ous are top producers ,,got all the saltwater dvds --learnt a lot from there and its very enjoyable.

blackfin -not so impressive

Nigel -shore angling -very good

"Dont hate the player hate the Game" dont hate the fishermen hate the producers

:raine DON'T WANT TO RAIN ON YOUR PARADE. BUT I WATCHED THE ANGOLA DVD AND THE DVD IS OVER AN HOUR LONG. THE FOOTAGE OF THE TRIP UP TO ANGOLA IS ABOUT 15 MINUTES. VERY INTERESTING FOOTAGE. WAR HAS KLAPPED THAT COUNTRY.

LOVE HOW THEY CAUGHT SHARKS IN THE LAGOON WITHOUT STEEL TRACE.

JA, THEY DO NEED TO ADD MORE BAIT TIPS AND INFO, BUT THE DVD IS VERY ENTERTAINING. WILL DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT.

CHOMP......

why must me support things if they are crap sorry habbib i really disagree with you on that one mate. I own a few hennie BFS dvd's and every one is brilliant, the blackfin dvd on the non return slide is possible the best fishing dvd i have ever seen, but i have the screeming reels in the tkei and i dont find them that great or informative, yest there are a few tips here and there and dome pretty average angeling, i mean you can only watch people catch small hammers for so long hey. I dont see why we must support them just because they are south african, lets rather support the guys who are making goog stuff then hopefully those who are not (screaming reels) will pick up their game and then in the end we will all benfit with a number of top quality publications. Also the price of the the dvd's is very expensive in comparson to the others for what you are getting.

Hi there. The Screamin Reels dvd's were not bad at all. :wfish

I know you like Big Fish Safari, I watched hennie's Volume 27 on Bassas da India. Have you watched Volume 27?? Then tell me what you think.......

Was a very nice destination, would love to fish there, must be very expensive. Until they started gaffing Potato Bass. They were being gaffed under the chin, but still, they are protected. As a pro angler, should he not know better than that???????

I would like to know from the members what they think about Potato Bass being gaffed. I wonder what the top fishermen like Bryan Rapson and Spyker Kruger think on this. My pals and I were totally flabbergasted and our wives were appaulled as they are huge into conservation, you know the whole 'ecofriendly' thing.:fbash

Hi guys
I met Mr Spyker Kruger and part of his team at the pretoria Bundu Show and like to say (apart from the trail discussion)that they are a great bunch of guys, friendly, helpful, and trying,
I have two of thier DVD's and i quite enjoy it, so i belive that they can only get better from whatever they can get from this forum, hay aint that what we all need in life "good advice to get better"?
Any how nice meeting you Guys and like somone else already said thank you for showing us some of the great coastlines that we might not get to see for ourself.

It was great meeting you at the show. I have to admit that it was even better knowing you are from the sealine family, makes talking sense about fishing so much easier.Again thanks for the support , we did the angola 2 awhile ago but was great to launch,

Being part of the sealine family with negative and positive feed back is giving me a better idea what the guys want ,but we have to remember that it is not only fisherman that buy these dvd"s.

trying to give the buyer something worth his money is my mayor CONCERN now.

cheers

Great dvd ,good fish and well presented!!!

I watched the dvd, I like to buy other guys dvds as I still feel it is all in good cause.

They are releasing the fish with care and then comes the GAFFING of one of our most critical species! I dont know about that, it is not my show so I cant say what the reason was. But looking at the reply I got after the gaffing of sharks on Transkei and Henties, I will keep my eyes open for any future reviews that the readers post on this.

I have never ever seen myself as a PRO Angler, and do not try and brand myself as one, But I think when you do that you should know better.......

Hi there. You say Spyker sucks and Hennie rocks. At least Spyker tags and releases his fish in the best way he can. Have you watched any of the latest ones? Guess not.:raine

Hennie on the other hand, will catch 10 Greenspot Kingfish in the surf and then the 11th Greenspot Kingfish, he was confused and was asking around what species it was. LOL. He is supposed to be a 'PRO ANGLER'...... That was his LINENE dvd. (confused as anything).... I don't mean to rag him but he is a pro isn't he???:shark

Then comes BIG FISH SAFARI VOLUME 27, where he is gaffing POTATO BASS. What do you think about that?? You say you are an angler from the Cape and you are not a beginner, so what are your views on this???? Or is the Potato Bass not protected on BASSAS DA INDIA??????????????????

You should watch those Transkei DVD's, maybe you will catch bigger sharks than your 10kg raggie. lol.

Watch Big Fish Safari volume 27, where hennie gaffs Potato Bass with some clients of his.

Nobody has obviously seen this, as they have not responded to my questions. Or is everybody Hennie verskok that they will just brush this to one side???????????

I liked the action, but to be honest and perhaps I am out of line here BUT.......Ricky Shams commentry gets on my nerves. And the soundtracks need serious re-thinking.

Something that really irritates me is how everyone gets so worked up and then start to have a go at each other. Stop taking things so personal and just make your comments. I received the Transkei dvd as a gift and was extremely dissapointed. Honestly, the sharks were tiny and the dvd was not entertaining. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen, but it never did. This does not mean that Spyker cant fish or is a bad guy. The producers should realise that the product is not up to scratch. I would be embarassed to put that dvd on the shelf, however I will probably never be in a dvd. Just remember, public figures always open themselves up to comment from strangers.

@Habib,
jeez bud. I feel that I have the right to voice my opinion, especially when I have paid for something. I have been shark fishing for a short while only and can honestly say that I did not learn a thing from the Transkei screemin reels(the first one). Maybe someone that knows absolutely nothing or has never caught a decent shark would get more value out of it. I agree that most of us are novices, but we are still human beings who have a right to our opinion. I also dont like slagging people and that is where the issue lies. Some people tend to get nasty instead of politely making their case. I respect you and your opinion. :)

At the end of the day these guys be it Hennie, Spyker, Rapson,ESA, etc have the B%^LS to put what they love on a DVD. Then the best we can do is scrutenize and critisize these guys. I am very sure that when we look past the mistakes they make they make we actually learn a lot-My 2 bob.

Um potato bass isnt a protected species at bassas da india? Lol actually i dunno?? Is it part of Madagascar or Moz? Anyway i dont think that gaffing it in the jaw, if done properly, will do the fish too much damage. Hell, brindle bass chow stingrays! Didnt anyone notice that their 'oceanic white tip' was just a silver tip reef shark? I generally enjoy bfs though. Hennie is a good presenter who makes a good effort. His species identification isnt always spot on, nor is his english, but he does try damn hard! No locally made fishing dvds can touch Angling With Blackfin though. For quality and content! Those guys dont skimp on content or sharing knowledge.

I don't want to go into nailing this "pro" or that "pro", but a certain one makes us look like real horses bums

especially when they keep a shark so long out the water THAT IT STARTS GOING PINK and then proceed to RELEASE IT AGAIN ...

And when they get flatfish with those LOVELY HOLES to stick your fingers into and then proceed to pull the fish out of the water that way ... ai tog.

Big Trees tend to get alot of wind

The "celebrity" angler I have the most respect for and would love to meet would most definately be Wesley.

Oh and I forgot to mention, Wesley is actually 4th on my list, sorry make that 5h, cause the 4 top spots belong to (in no specific order) Nepps, HT, Miles and Reefman

The biggest problem with the SA Shows and DVD's, STOP TELLING EVERYONE THAT YOU ARE THE PRO'S - cause you not, just be normal anglers that make good quality DVD's and shows. It creates LESS expectations and people can relate to fellow NORMAL ANGLERS.

When you the pro, everybody will watch and wait for you to make a mistake and then BAM, they will nail you for it.

Especially if you from Kempton ... (those holes for your fingers again come to mind) ...

BTW, I've never seen the Spyker DVD's

I do have a few Big Fish DVD's that I bought a long time ago and a few Berkley ones, that I quite enjoy and then ofcourse the best ones will always be the Blackfin ones.

Hi Thinus

:welcomesea: to Sealine & enjoy your stay!

Beginning of the year I started of with more or less the same question as you.  Here is a lot of info on this site about Henties, try using the search function and enter Henties/Hentiesbay/Hentiesbaai.

If you still not happy the guys wont mind if you PM them with a question:

Simon

Spyker Kruger

Also start a dedicated thread if you still not getting all your answers

Myself will be in Henties sometime between the 23 September & 2nd October, going on a mini tour, but plan to spent a couple of days fishing.  I can help you with some coordinates.

Hope this helps.

Going to Henties in December and therefore watched the DVD over the week end. If you've been in Henties before you'll know that very few if any other SA fishing spots has the same "vibe","character", "atmosphere", "air" as this combination of desert and ocean. SA anglers have been going back there year after year to build on their fond memories. SPYKER is a "Henties"  legend that "lives his passion" and I don't care about any of the mistakes or shortfalls in the DVD. I took everything I could learn from this and truly believe that it will help me when targeting Bronzies and other sharks in Henties. The bait presentations were very interesting as I need to evolve a bit more from sliding to casting baits-that part was great.

If you want fancy camera work and good English language...watch ESA

If you want to see a legend in action..."screeming reels in Henties Bay"

If you are worried about the gaffs on the sharks (which I was when I watched it the first time) go look again. The gaffs were placed and used efficiently but carefully with limited damage done.

If you know everything about fishing...go fish and stop buying DVD's and show us your tips and fishies:wfish

Hello Admin,

Because I chose to comment about Enroc's statement, doesn't mean I've haven't been following the thread, just didn't take kindly to him addressing fellow sealiners as "twats and dvd's been shoved", BTW I sleep at nite.........

If there are any sponsors available or even some freelance camera men prepared to do pro-bono work, there will be some 30 Sealiners in Henties in December.

Spyker and Simen can head up the re-make of the DVD and the GP team can fill in the gaps with some good fish, a couple of red cans and a Sealine kuier of note..

He he he - " Screaming Sealiners in Henties "

(Edit = spelling error)
(Edit 2 = GP rules)

The Fish Africa with the Alcock Brothers DVD's in my personal opinion are the best produced salt water fishing DVD's in South Africa, nothing comes even close!!
Each one has 2 full hour long episodes that are crammed with tonnes of professional advice on lure fishing techniques.
The twin brothers, Chad and Lando Alcock, are the presenters and they give a wealth of knowledge and info that has improved my fishing incredibly.
The footage is really well filmed and edited, with a great sound track and voice over.
If you are into lure fishing like drop shot, lead head, swimming lures, spoons, surface lures, etc then you will learn a lot from these DVD's.
There are 3 DVD's so far.
