this is 1 size brindle,look how healthy it is.cant see how fishermen in the old days could keep these amazing specimens.

Lennie... thats a baby bud. They grow to double that size... as big as a VW Beetle. When you scuba diving with them, it never ceases to amaze me, their passive nature and their sheer bulk. And to think the spearo's had a field day on these creatures...

Im pretty sure that is the brindle that was caught by Deon from raggie tackle in st lucia. The fish was collected by the people from Ushaka. The weight of the bass was not known until mutch later as it was put in quarantine and only the weighed later. The fish lost quite a bit of weight while in quarantine. The stretcher that was initially used to transfer the fish to the transport tank broke when they tried to lift it.( stretcher as used in ambulances)
This could probly have been a SA record for a brindle caught from the beach.

Reefer - Have you seen the Brindles on the Produce at Aliwal?
I remember my first dive on the Produce in perfect conditions... 20+ metres of Vis.... zero current... Got down onto the main deck and stuck my head through one of the deck hatch openings.... pitch black inside so it took about 15 to 20 seconds for my eyes to adjust to the darkness..... and there right in front of me, no less than 6 ft away , all I see is this HUGE mouth with two HUGE eyes staring at me.... I think that big bugger must have been at least twice the size of the one in Lennies shot... easy 500 kilos.... I k@kked myself!!!!
There are about 4 or 5 of them that live in the Produce... they float along like Zepellins..... And they could probably swallow a scuba diver with tank and all in the blink of an eye without touching sides.... AWESOME creatures...

Jees Nepps, 500kgs?!?!? Was your wetsuit reusable after that??? Have never dived with air before, but can only imagine the feeling when you are down there and into the world of such a fish. And like Reefman says, for such a huge animal to be so passive underwater, must be a real humbling experience. Really would NEVER be able to take a fish like that out of the water...

Yep, my first scuba experience with a Brindle was very similar...! Lol. Scary mutha's! Thank goodness for their passive nature!

The SA Shore Angling record is 188.2 kg BTW.

Dean - They are passive to a point.... Try shoot a fish around one and land it.... NO CHANCE... these things will inhale a 30 or 40 kilo fish EASILY.... Bear in mind that their mouths when that size are close to a metre wide, and when they open that mouth and flare their gills, the suction they cause is just like a frickin black hole vortex....... We used to feed the Potato Bass with red fang trigger fish... you grab one by its tail and they start flicking making a commotion that draws in the Bass and you hold the trigger out and those Bass come to within about a foot and a half and just flare their gills and open thier mouths and WHOOOSH..... Bye bye trigger fish.... Thats with a 80 to 100 kilo Potato... imagine what a 500 kilo Brindle can do..... they are awesome!!!

Jees bru.... sounds absolutely freeking insane!!!! Would do anything to be able to see and feel that fish pull the triggers right from your hands. You oukes really do experience a world like no other when you are down there... damn.

Shjoe bru... i wouldnt want to get caught in an old cabin underwater with something like that checking you out and sizing you up.

How do these fish feed? Day? Night? Do they just target anything or do they stick to something in particular? Im guessing that they would be an ambush attacker rather than chase the sh*t out of the fish until it gets it. And with a mouth like that, once it gets the "vortex" affect, the bait fish doesnt stand a chance!

Dean they pretty much eat whatever they want because there aren't many things bigger than them... As you can see from that video, they aren't bothered at all by sharks...

They are mainly fish eaters, and as you say, defintely ambush predators...

yeah i would pay millions to have a tank like ushakas got in my house, i oath i would never get bored!i could sit there all day watching them.my little tank 1.4x2.6m is small compared to those tanks.whos into tanks and that here?i should take a photo and show yoy guys my saltwater tank,i got some nice fishies in there!but lots of care to keep it looking good and the fish healthy!

Passive, my @ss! Go and get a copy of Len Jones' book. I think its called Sharks, Dolphins and Big Fish. These fish will attack anything that can fit in their mouths and that's prety much anything, including people!
