Went down to Cape Point recently with my girlfriends father who used to work there as a student in the 60`s. He enjoys going back once in a while to do some fishing and check the old spots.

On our way down to Rooikrans we saw a spray of bait fish and it wasn't long before thee spinners were flying through the air. Watching from above the ledges it was amazing to watch the yellowtail chase the spinners.

I went to the ledges and there were probably 10 guys fishing, the excitement was unreal and I didn't even have a rod. i thought this was a myth but there I was seeing it unfold right infront of me. I could see the guys down there knew what they were doing and had a mutual respect for one another.

But the reason for the post was the highlight of watching this all. One guy caught what I thought was a really good fish maybe 4 or 5 kg but was quick to remove the hook and return it. I didn't get a chance to catch there names but it was good to see.

Its no secret. Its more like a buddy buddy club that side of the world. Some treat it as holy ground :) outsiders are made to feel unwelcome. Only if you arrive with a regular are you "welcomed"

Some of my buddies tried that spot. Only reporting what they told me.

This is a very interesting thread!!

I went down there many, many years ago to try to fetch myself a tail from shore (I have shot many from shore and boat, and caught many from boat).  This was a roots trip for me, something special to me, and I had the opportunity of going down there on a Monday.  And I had read Charles Horne’s book and expected all the camaraderie and good will he wrote about on the ledges.

Sadly, (aside from hooking and losing a few fish, one right in front to a seal), it was one of my most disappointing fishing experiences.  I stayed to one side of the “clan” and kept to myself, but even those who were in the “clan” were abusing each other in their fervour to get the shy fish to bite.  One old guy (whose face is burned into my memory) had a fish on, and someone cast over him (no big deal to me, wind it in and hook it off the line near his rod, or so I thought!)  He took his knife out of his sheath and threw it at the other guy, screaming “Cut your F*&%ing line!!

After that I swore I would never go back there again.  The “Rooikrans clan” is a disgrace to the fishing world.

Watch this thread, here comes war. Lol, I have been down there in peak time, its all about respect. It is not a place to go to with an attitude, those fisherman have been going there for years, so naturally they will protect their spot. Else it would be over run  just like all the other spots when they on. One word goes out and you have a mass of fisherman. So I don't think it is a bad thing. But once again, they have a manner in which they operate a sort of code of conduct if you will. If you not wanting to co-operate then it would be better to leave.

I personally prefer to spin or fish of the boat, less effort. The walk is a killer, I have slipped my a** off a couple of times going up and coming down. So to me its just not worth it.

I for one enjoy fishing in a crowd! i will abide by the rules of the spot, and if the crowd is still clicky, tough! the osean does not belong to them, i  also have a bait knife and i dont believe in washing it, it's bad luck! so getting tapped with it will be least of their problems...

Skollie! LOL...I'm with you on that one bru as I fish alone. Unfortunatly some guys do think they own a spot.Previously discussed fishing etiquette.

That's why some form of ID amongst sealiners would be kwaai..Like you arive and its an ' I knows you" kinda situation which lends to a form of accepted friendliness.(My whishful thinking)

iv been going down there for a few years and dont belong to any clan and have never been abused or maybe havnt given anyone a chance to do so. maybe newbies  to the krantz should first spend some time and watch how this spinning thing is done before trying their own thing .i  dont think the problem is the amount of guys down there but is the amount of guys doing the wrong thing and spoiling everyone elses day. one of the experienced manne said to me "if someone throws a stone over you then you will go and inspect but if there are ten stones coming at you, run like hell". thats what the yellowtail does if they are bombeb. i believe in the LLL ( look listen learn ).

Agree 100% any point or smalish spot has it's own rules and if you have never fished it it is wise to ask first or just watch how things are done before you make everybody angry, and develope a few oil "leaks" lol
