I know its been a while since a posted this topic. I just got to reding it again and was wondering why the fish would die on a float? I also thought it would be deadly if thrown on a float?

I employ this method in fresh water when fishing for bass. Sometimes it's nice to have a line out at camp then I do this. I use a sliding foam float with a large swivel as a stopper and a 1m to 1.5m hook trace. For bass I use a large hook up to about 7/0 thin guage, hooked thru the flesh near the dorsal fin of a bluegill. Deadly for the bigger class fish! The same works for leeries and cob . The cool thing is you can see the bait getting nervous and trying to escape and 80% of the time you observe the take.

Hi Cptfly which reefs in struisbaai? i have use livies on a float for garrick from the harbour wall which worked quite well, if you stand right at the end the current often takes the float and livies out nicely and the garrick (and big elf) chow quick quick

i would rather slide if not at the harbour so that i could get the livies out further and faster

I have done this a couple of times , In Struis and Langebaan , you can Use a Tennisball or a Balloon or a Foam Float the ones with a wedge Stick float ,

Tennisball trace consists of :Tball with 2 holes[use a Bicycles spoke ] so you can get a 1mm piece of line Straight through the ball , tie 2 swiwels with a bead on each side to protect knots and double up as a stopper. Your Trace from there can be from a 1m ,1 oz Ballsinker Swivel , Thick mono and hook of choice , 0/6 and up ...
I have taken a few fish on this trace ,and seen YT getting caught on the same trace with live Maasbankers .
SHould you use this trace of a Boat at The Baan , justr go lighter on the mono and STeel , theres MONNNSTER elf there .

Second trace We have make use of is simple Peckfloat from Tackleshop , smaller ballsinker , and a Circle hook , one could opt for the double hook trace and should when using bigger livies on light tackle , however the second hook does the damage to the fish , so i prefer going with circles , 0/3 to 0/5 .We fish this rig in rivers like Demond, Zantvlei Gouritz and Breede with GREAT success with Bass rods and 5.5 kg mono , and 10Lbs braid . We fish from a cabin boat and the current makes life easy , Should you fish from the banks , you should choose your spot carefully keeping in mind the current it can work for you or against you .
Getting n Big Leerie intrested in your Livie is great fun , and notting like that grinders ZZzZzzZZZzzZZZZZZZzz , Remember wait till the fish takes drag if fishing with circles or basicly any other hook too .

I would like to know what Miles , Spin a holic , NielG and CO up there in the East could tell us ???
Sharp !

OOOOh ok Die Las, i have done it at st mungo point and got leeries, i have tried live bait in langebaan and got limited success you will have to wait for slack water or the livie will tired out very quickly. I want to try tossing a livie at yellow tail when they boiling on the surface, 8/0 circle no float that would be very exciting. TOE you have a pm
