Surfers A Fishermans Freind Or Foe

Hi there people yesterday i met a guy on north pier who was taking pics of the pier to try and save north pier from being blown up.He seemed very upset with the fact that our local goverment and ports authorities have cancented to the destruction of the pier.

After finishing our conversatition about the pier we walked and spoke about fishing and then the topic came up.He is a wind surfer and has had numerous encounters with angry fisherman on the piers.

After carefull consideratition i have come to my conclusion that we as fisherman share a common love of the ocean with them the surfers and windsurfers etc..

So why not learn to be more tollerant of eachothers love for the water accept that evryone has a right to the sea and to enjoy what she has to offer. In sociaty today many people forget what common courtesy and respect stand for, this is why i say let us as fisherman take the first step in becoming more tollerant of the surfers etc..and maybe in time they will return the favour and become more considerate of us the fisherman.

I do realise that we are not always the ones at fault, but maybe if we start to be different towards them they would the inturn become more considerate to us.I have on a number occations seen confrontatitions on bench pier which i myself have also been guilty of, swearing, shouting ,getting frustrated and alowing little things to spoil my fishing trip.

This is my opinion and i hope there are others who feel the same so we can start to make the little changes together.I would really appreciate some input on this and get different points of views on this topic from all angles so maybe we can get somewhere .

Thanks

Cheers Riymos

i ws fishin this weekend at north pier an i ws slidin a bait wen this guy on a paddle ski went over my line an he just looked at me an carried on paddlin as if there ws no prob. He ended up damagin abt 50m of my line badly which ws just a week old

so i don't really blame the fisherman wen they wana kick these guyz ass coz the are a bunch of inconsiderate jerkz who think they own the sea

tight lines

Listen i know you are right but hey what you need to unerstand is that these guys are quite away out and sometimes dont realise how far you have cast i may be wrong but most times these guys dont want to damage your line or iritate you it is just an honest mistake.

I also realise that there has to be a few rotten eggs who would probaby do it intentionaly so yupp you have a right to get angry line is very expensive next timeif you see them coming maybe scream or reel in if possible or even drop your rod do anything that will save a confrontation.

Lets us take the baby steps first and hopefully someday it will apy off for all of us.

Cheers Riymos

Some years back, when I was still living in Kalk bay,I used to go own to the harbour and do some kob fishing,I used to cast out but being just a beginner never could get the distance I needed,so I used to wait for the paddel skis or kayak's to come along, and they were quite close to the wall and used to ask them to paddel my bait out till iI waved them to stop.I used to get some good distance then (LOL LOL LOL )

I think we can all get along together we just have to consider each other and remember that we are all doing the sport we love ...we fish they surf, windsurf or paddel ski...yes and you will get a few rotten apples in between some good guys out there. (if you do come accrose one just follow him in and kick his ass.... only joking..)

No guy's seriousley lets all get along.....

Hehehe.... Hier kom k@k :fbash

As a surfer and a fisherman, I think I have a true understanding for both parties and can give an unbias view on this common matter

Look. The feeling when you have the fish of your life on the other end of the line cannot be described. Its truly awseome. I know, and so do you guys. It also ticks me off when some jerk off comes zooming past with a jetski/boat/surfboard whateva. It annoys me when Im sitting quietly on the bank of my favourite estuary and a bunch of wakeboarders come along and scare all the fish away, ruin the peace, and generally do it because they want to tick you off. This has happened, and it really got the better of me. They were shouting at me to @#$% off because according to them I shouldnt be fishing there, when in actual fact, I was there first and there is a big fat sign saying "no bathing". They were in the wrong, and it really @#$%ed me off

When the shad decided to pitch up at the pier where I surf, it brought the obvious, and alot of them! Atleast 50 fisherman on that pier. They were catching shad on every cast, and us surfers were right inbetween them. The inevitable happened and the one surfer accidentally rode over some guy's line. A few minutes later and tempers were fuming. The one fisherman actually aimed to hit the surfers! He eventually hit the one surfer on the back with a @#$%en 5oz sinker! For the love of all things living, what if that hit his head???? BLUDDY DOOS!!! That made that very very mellow surfer go get a base ball bat and go after that fisherman! I know the surfer, and he is a real nice guy. I have never seen him angry, NEVER!! A slaughtering nearly happened and I swear that surfer that got hit was truly going to beat the living crap outta that fisherman...And if he happened to kill that fisherman, then he would have been happy he did. If that fisherman is reading this, I think you owe a BIG apology...

That made me hate the fisherman on that pier for a very very long time. Those fisherman even turned that place into a dump! Rubbish everywhere! That made me hate them even more. I nearly got hit by a sinker as well, but I just fluked the idiot off and carried on surfing. Guys please please we mean no harm. We love the ocean just as much as you do. But yes you do get the rotten apples with surfers, but the same goes with fisherman. Some fisherman are real jerks as well. Remember I am stating this as a surfer AND a fisherman

Lets just carry on doing what we love doing and live in peace please...

Just read the above post , what you say is very true , the shad fisherman do leave that pier in a mess and it stinks for weeks , dont blame the surfer getting mad, but then again, there are fisherman then there are fisherman, wont be caught dead on that pier during a shad frenzie , i wont be able to keep my cool

i surfed for many years when i lived at the coast and one must understand that when there's a wave and you amped nothing will stop a keen surfer, surfers get much more pissed off with other amature surfers than with fisherman..

i try give the guys in the water a bit of lee way cause a lead moving at that speed can be fatal, and in all honesty the sea isnt just for fisherman,

you know how kak it is being a surfer and trying to jump point and all you smell if off sards, and you hopscothing between line and old rusty tackle that cause injury when one isnt wearing shoes...

the surfers are also very conservation aware, so maybe it would be good idea next time to give him a bit of lea way and respect and you will probably get it right back,,,, you never know, that surfer maybe be hawling your ass out of the sea next time you get washed of the point!!!!

And plus i think its the so called dam duikers (vallies) that piss the the surfers off just as much as they piss off!!

Wow thanx deisel, you understand, and I respect you big time for that. Thank you. I feel your pain if you are missing the surf....

Ya when you look inbetween the doloses here all you see is old sardine boxes, old hooks, plenty of nylon, and LOADS of beer cans (cummon guys, get drunk at home or at a friends' place, not on a pier where the waves can wash you off.... Then you really embarass yourself because the lifeguards have to haul you out, and talking from experience, its not lekka dealing with a drunk guy who is going to drown)

^^^ I hope I never offended anyone by that beer comment, if I did, I appologise

yesterday evening I was fishing on the extreme right of the slipway at melkbos, two guys with boogie boards came up to me and asked me where I was casting,I told them and they said ok they would keep clear of my line.that to me is an excellent attitude.likewise if I see blokes surfing there's no way i'm going to intrude and start casting near them, even if they're on my favourite spot.live and let live I say,a little respect and good manners go a long way!
