An update on Luke

Sadly Luke has not been doing very well.  The more chemo he has the more the leukemia keeps coming back.  He is under another bout of chemo now and after this treatment they will kill off all his stem cells and proceed with a bone marrow transplant.  He will also be put onto an anti rejection medication, and this medication could cause organ failure.  He is not very strong at present, but we hope and pray that he will get through this next phase.

Please keep him in your thoughts

Luke Miles 24/11/1967 – 02/09/2011

http://www.sunflowerfund.org.za/Wall-of-Remembrance/mileslbluke-miles-24111967-02092011

It is with a heavy heart that I’m informing all of you that Luke Miles passed away on Friday 2nd September 2011 at 8am.

I would like to thank the Sealine community, especially Emperor and all the members who made contributions (you gents know who you are) for your support and goodwill over this trying time.

As you know, Luke was diagnosed with Leukaemia in December 2010, so had been bravely battling this terrible disease for a full 9 months. At one point about 2 months ago after several rounds of intensive chemotherapy, Luke’s prognosis was looking promising. So much so, that he was released from hospital in Cape Town and allowed to travel back to Port Elizabeth to be with his family. Sadly, after having been back but a few weeks, the Leukaemia resurfaced and his health rapidly declined.

Without a bone marrow transplant or a miracle, Luke’s condition was at that point terminal. Luke spent the last few weeks of his life in St. Georges Hospital, being looked after by the amazing staff there. Towards the end his suffering was clearly visible. He is now finally at peace.

Luke is survived by his parents Don & Gobby, brother Dougal, wife Yana and young daughter Anastasia.

A fisherman to the very end, Luke had written a letter to his family that was to be opened on his passing, in which he commented on how he had lived a full and enriching life, one of the reasons being that he had fished some of the best waters on the planet.

Thank you again to all of you for your support!

Please be sure to support The Sunflower Fund so that people like Luke who are diagnosed with this terrible disease might have a better chance of beating it.
