Paddle Challenge 2011: What's all the fuss about?
Hi everyone.
I would like you to take the time to read the following surrounding the Paddle Challenge event and what it is all about…
The Paddle Challenge 2011 is an event that came about due to certain individuals appetite for adventure and the need to support something worthwhile supporting…
We had the idea of undertaking a long distance paddle over a couple of days and fish along the way; and adventure quite attractive to any Kayak Fisherman. In addition to the adventure itself, we decided to make it a fundraiser of some sort, not having a particular charity or institution in mind at the time.
Once the concept of the event was established the process of searching and selecting a beneficiary started… with Save Vetch’s Beach as the first beneficiary of the Paddle Challenge event.
The guys from the SVA ( consisting of members from Durban Paddle Ski Club, Durban Ski Boat Club, Durban Undersea Club, Point Yacht Club, Durban Surfing Community and general members of the public who has an interest in preserving the beach)
are fighting a cause at their own cost and reputation, not being recognised and appreciated by the majority of the people who will benefit, should they be successful in their quest.
Hence we decided that the Paddle Challenge will be an effective tool in generating the support they deserve, thus selected the SVA is the initial beneficiary of the Paddle Challenge.
Over and above the beneficiary of the 2011 event and the controversy surrounding the Point Development; we want to establish the Paddle Challenge brand to ensure an annual event supported by Paddlers and Kayak Fisherman, that gives back to the community.
If this is achieved then every participant can proudly say that he or she was part of something great!
So I urge every reader to consider getting involved in this event, whether it be for the competition between friends or clubs, to support the current cause or just to be part of something greater than just today…
Maybe we’ll paddle from Richards Bay to Durban next year, or Kosi to Cape Town… But we need the support of every person with a boat and paddle.
Please send this on to anyone who might be interested in participating or support the Paddle Challenge in any way.
Many thanks and regards,
Henk
