The small crabs are so easy to get, you pick them up as you pump prawns. Plus, BAT Center is not illegal. It's A-OK to fish there!!

Bat centre it is then - wasnt keen on hiding behind ships at the sugar terminal. Ducking and diving is not my style- i just wanna fish, no issues.

Tell me J_Bay, there at BAT centre do you have to pay for parking or is that an entrance fee? i have no car, just wondering.

You pay for parking, it's like R10, if you get there early you can park in front of the spot you gonna fish, if you are going to fish on the side by the museum!

If you walk in, as far as I know it's free!

Howsit guys - Fished BAT Centre one weekend and then Behind Cafe Fish. Both times didnt catch much. Live bait ( small Blacktail ) seemed to have done the trick. This guy was fishing with live blacktail and hooked a kingy and just lost it when trying to lift it out of the water! Other than that theres some small niggling bites all over on cracker - must be small grunter? When u throw a sardine inside it comes back all chewed up :(

Howsit Ridwhan, :welcomesea:

What sort of bait are you using, cracker, sardines, chokka/squid or plastics?

Hi Guys,  fishing is only allowed from  th BAT Centre to Wilsons Wharf because this area is under lease from Transnet to the Ethekwini.  Transnet does not allow fishing in any other area in the Durban Harbour.  Something must be done to have this changed.  The KZN Subsistence Fishermans Forum is in discussion with Transnet to open fishing from the wharfside in Durban harbour.  Join the fight if/when you are required to do so.

Hi Mate

I have been to Durban in July 2012 and did some inquiries and also heard that nobody is allowed at the wharfside. What I was told you can now hire or charter a boat and in some reports in the Kingfisher website I have seen a guy catch a Grunter and in the background noticed the railing and maybe at times one is allowed at the yatch mole.

Anyway if you do have any info please share it as I am also keen to go.

Regards

Sam

Hi Sam,  with exception from the area starting from the jetty on the South side of the BAT Cente  to Wilson"s Wharf, no angling is allowed in the Durban Harbour.  The reason I started this discussion is that we can either sit back and accept this as the status quo or we can all come together and challenge the Port Authority to allow fishing in the Durban Harbour like we have done for  centuries.   The KZN Subsistence Fishermans Forum has taken on the fight and needs support of every angler to win this battle.   Hope this clarifies the reason for me starting this thread of communication.

I recently moved back to Natal after being away for about 15 years and used to fish in Durban harbour with a small boat before I moved away. I will really appreciate it if someone can please tell me if fishing is allowed from a small boat in the harbour as I am considering getting a small boat again to use in the harbour if allowed.

Eholder, yes you can fish in the harbour from a boat. however there are rules and regs governing that.

Your boat will need to have a boyancy certificate, it will have to be safety surveyed and be issued with a 2017 COF. You will need the appropriate safety equipment depending on your boats catagory, harbour fishing only is Cat R.

Then you will need a fishing permit with additional as boats skipper.

Your best bet is to join one of the many clubs in the harbour and have them direct you through the entire process.

Thanks very much MichaelK, this is exactly what I needed to know. I used to belong to Durban Boat Owners Association which was based in the harbour when I previously fished there. I will visit them to see if they still exist and will speak with them.

Durban Boat owners association 031 - 3054370

If i remember correctly their annual fees are about R650

I personally prefer the social aspect to fishing and prefer a club with a clubhouse to interact with other fishermen. Clubs to consider include Bobbies, pompano, Fynnlands and Bluff yacht club
