Taking on PE winds

After seeing a kite fisherman at mazeppa bay last month and the unbeleivable fish he was catching I got very intested in seeing how this could be done. I must say as well that after reading all the great posts here on this very unique way of fishing I just couldn't resit anymore and had to give it a go.this also got me wondering why it has died out to such an extent?
So I am picking up my kite this afternoon , I got it from a guy in pe that has been making kites since 1992. The kite is a square 750 x 750 with a long detachable tail , It looks exactly the same as the windsong kite and only costs R120.
I have a old boat rod with roller eyes that I got for R50 from a second hand store and a penn senator. I have spooled it with 0.65 mono ( planning on changing it when funds are better).
I have read as much as I can now read and learn without some practical practise.
The wind seems perfect on saterday , 20km direct offshore.
I was adsolutly shocked at the price the the roller clips , R950 a pair. I really don't mind loosing a R120 kite but I will cry if I loose a 500 clip. How did they do it in the old days? Or does anyone have any diy ideas ?
I will post pics of my setup and kite later.
Any last minute advice for an absolute beginner?

yeah those roller clips cost serious cash.
i got 2, not quite the same, down rigger clips from Ebay for $18 including postage to our neck of the woods

Howzit!what did the guy catch at mazeppa?What do you wanto target??do you want to drop your bait or leave it on the surface.Where are you planning to go fish with your kite in pe??

The guy was catching monster cob and leerie And I think he was using elf as live bait.
I want to start by targeting edibles untill my budget allows me to catch something bigger I want to also drop my bait. I was thinking of going to wells estate if there is no one else around so I don't make a fool of myself with people watching.

I also landed a few good fish this winter there my best being a 170 kg grey that took me 5 hours.You must go to commercial marine and ask them for an outrigger clip, its by far the best and cheapest way to drop your bait.If you gona start out why dont you send your baits from the dolosse or from something good,it takes some time to get the settings on the clip just right and the less waves to get it over the better and easier,theres some good structure not far from the dollosse so if you send it out with a nice light sinker line youll def get a few good kob,ive caught some big ones in august there on livies,you must try and fish it as much as possibe before the summer comes so you can be ready for zambies,ill be in pe next thursday so if you fishing that day i can give you a hand

Enjoy it, Something good is a great spot to drop baits for eds and big in-eds. To the right near the Summerstrand beach and drop some nice Chokka kob baits out deep.

Don't know what clips you are looking at but the Aftco Gold Finger Outrigger clips are what I have been using for years now. Commercial marine should have them as well. Costs about R120 a clip.

If you don't have a clip you can attach the bait to be dropped to the swivel on the kite line (100m from kite,connecting the kite line to main line). Attach it with a cotton (latex bait cotton pulled tight works best or 5 or 7lbs line)

When the bait is the desired distance out lock the fishing line and let the kite keep flying, when the kite stops flying the bait rig is under maximum pressure strike against the tight cotton and it will pop the rig loose.

Experiment a bit before sending it out till you get the right breaking point. What must happen is that the line should be able to hold the bait and the impact of waves on the bait etc for example a 1kg bait and allow 2kg for drag in the water and waves so a 3kg line of 10cm between a loop on the leader and the swivel in the line.

With the kite pulling one way and you striking the other way you will break the line and release the trace.

Through trial and error I found that a loop of line taped to the leader allowing the sinker to hang at least 2 meters below the kite swivel, if not and you have to strike more than once the sinker often wraps around the kite line and you have to reel both in and do it all over again.

Phone Basil Manning or the Kingfisher and ask for the Outrigger release clips, the AFTCO Goldfinger and not the AFTCO Roller Troller outrigger clips (the R900 a set type)

I know that Lucky's in Manaba (Margate way) stocks them

I saw that All Out angling had some Stonfo Outrigger clips in their clearance bin, call Thinus at 0126534294 and ask him, maybe you can make a score there.

Has anyone tried these before?

I got to try my rig for the first time this weekend.
Saterday I went down to a nice quiet spot by bwb to try out my new setup only to find that there was no wind at all...I setup my kite anyway on the hopes that the wind would come up and without fail it did. It took a while of trail and error to get the kite flying and learning how to tac it. Needless to say I didn't even come close to putting a bait in the water but finished the day happy , I had learnt how to fly my kite and get it stable , phase 1 completed.

Sunday dawns and my fishing partner drops me , I deside stuff it how hard can it be to do this alone. This is were I think thinks started to go wrong.
I get down to the beach and the wind is at my back and I am amped to try get my bait in the water. I setup send the kite out 100m , pefect stable and I am a happy man. I rig up my other rod , bait up , clip the bait to the kite line and off went the bait. I was doing all this one man with rod stand and at this point I did wonder why people allways said its a 2 man job. I got my bait out about 300m and was really happy I put my kite into its stand and went to the other rod to strike and unclip the bait. I strike ....no release... Strike again.... No release ... I hit the hell out of it ....no release. At this point I am swearing and then it dawns on me , I have 2 line out 300m conected to each other that needed to be reeled in together to aviad tangles and snags but only one pair of hands ... Oh no. Just then a bit of luck someone came walking past and I roped him into helping me . I got both line back , no harm done. I set the clip to really loose or so I thought and stupidly send another bait out. Pick up the other rod strike.... No release .. By this stage I am pissed of with myself and strike with all I can give which then sends the kite straight into the sea 400m out and still NO RELEASE!
Once the kite was in the sea I give a good pull YAY it released atleat I had a bait out 300m . I picked up my kite rod expecting to never see my kite again and start a very slow retreive , after about a 45min fight with my kite and the sea I successfully landed it YAY , what was the most embarrasing was the fact that a small crowd had gathered to see this huge fish I had been fighting even though I had said it was just my kite in the water, they just didn't understand it wasnt a fish...
A lot was learnt yeterday. Mainly never kite fish alone it will end badly and I think I am going to practice the release other dry land before I go out again .
I am hooked and can see many many kites being bought

@Antv nice report and there's nothing like doing it yourself and experiencing something. I'm also very keen on getting some kites and trying it. By the way how many meters of washing line rope did you use to get the kite stable?

I used the tail that came with the kite
Its about 7 - 10m tail that's made out of that very thin flat yellow vynil piping u can get at builders , it looks like the 60mm diameter. I will post a pick of it later

After loosing some very expensive release clips, I have come up with a handmade prototype that should work. I will test it this weekend and if it does work I will let you know.

I am thinking to sell them at around R50 each (cheap enough to loose a few)

I will report back next week.
