Bloemhof Fishing Spots

Hello,

I was hoping that someone can fill me in on Bloemhof as I am not getting the picture clearly…

There are 2 places to choose to fish from, Sandveld (Freestate) and the Bloemhof Nature Reserve (NW)...and within these reserves there are fishing spots like Die Hoek, Skep Net etc.

I am planning a trip there in November and was hoping that you could help me locate a good spot with directions to get there?

I’m not having much luck searching online…

Die Hoek is actually a resort just below the dam wall & is actually on the Vaal River, not next to the dam. Havent heard of Skep Net, but I've seen other spots on the river in Bloemhof, like 'Die Oord', also on the river, not the dam. Die Hoek has great accommodation, caravans next to the water front, & scroes points in terms of convenience, you have power, the shops are closeby, etc. Inside the nature reserves, it is more rudimentary, Sandveld does have Chalets close to the entrance, but most guys prefer to set up camp next to the water.

You will only really get a good idea of how the places are layed out once you go over there & see for yourself. Personally, I prefer the Dam to the River, because I've had greater success there. Sandveld is the more popular one of the two, deeper water closer to the bank, so it usually gets full much faster. I've had better success with the Cats on the NW side, but there are some really shallow spots the further away from the ablutions, so it would depend on where you set up camp, but there's lots of space.

Just go & see for yourself, & try doing a search on the forum about Bloemhof, heaps of info. Also look at google maps if you want to get an aerial view so it can give you some more perspective.

I hope that clears up some of your frustration. With so little time to fish, it becomes a gamble choosing any place, so we would like to go colour in the grey areas as much as possible before going there, but you will only really know once you go see for yourself, & make somewhat calculated decisions based on the info you have. I'd say if it's your first time there, skip the river & do the dam. Tight lines :)

Hi steelpulse007
Already your explanation has given me a great inside. I was searching the forum, looked at aerial shots of the dam and managed to find a lot of names of these spots but no directions so I presumed it was within these two reserve boundaries.

Thank you so much for your help in this regard! Much appreciated.

Many guys reckon the best spot at Sandveld is 100m from the bridge (which will be on your right at Sendveld), I've never seen that spot empty, but even a couple of hundred meters from there should be good, just try to steer clear of the FAR left extreme of Sandveld, it gets quite shallow & snaggy over there.

At NW, the spot(s) closer to the bridge also have deeper water closer to the edge, close to the ablutions; it gets shallower as you move away from the bridge.

As it were, fishing in the river can be a bit more challenging, the river I've found to be unpredictable, but holds potential for great results, Die Hoek is said to produce big catfish. But Bloemhof Dam is what you're probably going to experience, & given that fish in the river might still be spawning, I will repeat, give the river a miss & settle on the dam. Coming from Joburg on the N12, take the Hoopstad turnoff to your left, about 1 or 2 km's from Bloemhof town, but there are signs to direct you, it's easy once you're there, you cannot get lost.
