hottentot in atlantic waters

Where is a good spot to find those large 2kg hottentot when launching from Oceana?
I have found a reef close to brandpad but it seems that it only produces the smaller hottentots.

There are some reefs on Melkbos side of Robben island called the Colony, the reefs are not very big and you have to ride around a bit with the echo to find them, but when the water is warm and you find a nice reef you catch very nice size hotties......i will try to get the gps co ordinates for you

Have you ever tried dropshotting for them? Which dropshot would you recommend. I tried Berkley Bloodworm the last time I was there on the reef near brandpad but they took the best on pilchard. They even prefered pilchard over white mussel which I collected myself. Maybe its because they were so small.

Now I am not going to share my reefs that side, sorry. I found them using the chart, spying on the commercials from the road past the pool at sea point toward Houtbay (big clue there). Plus that's half the fun, the reef hunting.

The sandworm has produced the best results for us, and very fresh cut maasbanker have been a winner for the bigger ones.

The trick with the hotties is to raise them up. The bigger ones will often feed above and when you catch the smaller ones, raise your baits. Remember a good old chum bag is a must. You can actually lift the fish closer to the boat, something I did not believe until I saw it happen and then did on my own boat.
I learnt how to catch bunches of hotties on a small commercial boat and with the skipper of Beverly Gail another very small boat. The skipper has had articles published on catching them and has often been seen catching them off the outside wall at Oceana from the land. I reckon he's a bit of a hottie guru.

Look at the GPS map and the SAN chart. You will see lots of small pinnacles off of Moulie point etc. I have one further out in 26m and it is a slayer. It also is killer for Jacopever.
As we don't eat them we release them all. But when the SE is screaming and there's nothing doing, a sheltered Granger bay launch and couple mile run is always a pleasure.

Just outside the bouy by whale rock has delivered some huge hotties for us too.

Cheers

Hammertime. I will most certainly go look for them myself! I just needed to be guided in some area as finding the reefs is surely half the fun but then also half the fuel bill!!! Thanks for the info.

You better hope I never catch sight of your boat on the sea. I will follow you like a bad smell!!!

What dropshot tackle do you prefer for the hotties? Do you use jigheads with the sandworm or do you just use a 3 way with a 2/0 hook? I still have lots of frozen maasbankers caught on the sabiki's at gbay! Will try them out!!

I always put a chumbag out. Sometimes the sharks start to harras the bag though!

Is this Mouille point close to oceana you are talking about? Also, whale rock is that the whale rock near camps bay or the one near Robben?

Please forgive me if these are stupid questions but I have only been out on that side once and I don't really know the area all that well.

I am planning on launching again on saturday. Will first try and find some snoek and after that I will search for some hotties.

Hallo Johan

Glad to see that there are other guys fishing on the Atlantic side. I also identified some potential spots on the chart plotter and had some success, all depends on the water temperature and weather. I also found some yellow tail behind Robben now and again.

Also planning on launching at OPBC Saturday morning. Might be some snoeke in the area, if not I will try for some Hottentot as well.

My boats name is Bingo II - white Witblitz.

Alright, first things first there are NO STUPID QUESTIONS. Only people who are to proud or afraid to ask.
I took a gentle reminder from Miles on the phone a while back to remind me of how spoiled I was to have spent my youth on a boat and gain the knowledge from my dad, rather than having to scratch around for it. So please ask away, I will answer where I can.

I will have to put some rear view mirrors on Vixen and a oo7 smoke screen. Nah only kidding, if you see us and wanna follow, go for it. Just remember we also MOMBAK, so no knives back at the slip :fbash.

The rigs we use: it's all here, go check it out  http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=7846&forum_id=45

I do use the jig heads and the traces. Let me explain.
I find the jig heads etc work well with the larger mouthed Jacopevers, Gurnards and kob.
I am talking now of bigger Jig heads around the 1oz or 3/4 oz for getting down fast.

With the Hotties if we fishing close in I will swap to a 1/4 ounce or smaller and that works fine. But if we are in the deeper areas, I swap to the similar style trace you see in the link above. All fluero and we DO USE circles only, as we release the little buggers.
The circles work with the worm just fine.

Chum bad on that side of the world and sharks - Never had an issue.

That big candy striped lighthouse = mouliie point lighthouse.

Whale rock Robben Island. Remember to give the island some distance though.

Hope that helps
