Hi All

I was wondering what the average fisherperson spends on his tackle, bait, equipment etc.

I was trying to put a cost / value to all my gear for insurance purposes and was quite surprised at the total value. This was only for equipment and tackle, not including bait or even the petrol spent to get from home to the water and back.  Considering the sport is supposedly bigger in rand value than Rugby and Cricket, I was wondering what the norm would be in set up costs as well as how much is given out each month on bait etc.

How much do you guys spend per month and what was your initial outlay for your tackle?

This year to date in gear alone, around 11k. Last year - probably upwards of 8, and if I go back to all my fly gear - scary. That is tackle only.

The trips internationally, the petrol and flights to the coast? Bait? Fuel for the boat? These costs are categorized as "holiday" costs, but if allocated to the sport we all love, would be a lot higher than the tackle costs. By an order of magnitude of 4 at least is my guess.

I do not want to do the calculations....... a palpitation would be the result. My other half is an accountant, she must NOT do the sums.

I am sure that for most of us out there, IT IS A LOT!!!!!

Tackle 5K a year and seems the terminal tackle is the expensive part of this.

Boat and veichle to fish venues Fuel -  10K

Entrance fees overnight etc 5K

Repairs and miselaneous 2k

Graze/drink for these outings probs another 2 K

So I bet a fair guess would be 25K for me a inland based freshwater boat angler

I forgot to add to replace my current tackle would cost me in the region of 60K and that is just the rods and reels and other expensive stuff.

R8000 per year just on line over the past 3 years. Thank the league for that.
My monthly spend at the tackle shops averages around R2500.00.  In season I can thank the plague of blues for the hundreds of R16 a pop hooks we lose.
My top spend at tuckers is R22 000.00 in a day. Suburban R15700.00 and Specialist was R5800.00.

I have no idea how much on bait. But R300.00 a trip sounds right.
Hmmmn. Tackle valued at just under R150 000, that's the stuff not in boxes locked in the garage and nothing to do with the boat etc. it does include all the lures in the huge white fibre glass box in the garden flat.

No wonder I'm always broke. I just looked at some receipts when I read this thread and I must get help.
You wanna know the truth. I don't use half of it.

Sad but true... put a value to all my goods (although not nearly a 10th of what HT has) Then looked at the value of the gear I use vs the value of the dust collectors.

Bro, I think you may have got me to take a look at what I'm bloody doing here.

I just took a peak into a box of unused discarded halco's, stroms and metal bibbed rapala's.
35 in there without hooks etc. There are about the same number in a box with hooks. All of them never used.
If you do the maths on R100 bucks a lure which is about right that's a lot of tom.

I just found 8 rolls of 45kg fluero I never knew I had. Spring cleaning for me tonight and tomorrow.

I am going to ban myself from the tackle shops. If I used them it would be fine but this is looney.

Go Matt, you can do it.

Ask guys like Carcharius for a job as a Ghillie/boat cleaner/beverage fetcher/car washer/tackle rigger etc. and you will learn a lot, and experience a lot. If you do it right, there will be tips (of the bucks variety) and even sometimes guys who are outgrowing their tackle need someone to pass it on to - sometimes this stuff will come your way, and even if it is 2nd hand - nothing wrong with that. The important thing is that they will pass knowledge on to you, and for that there is no substitute. The University of Life.....

Jeeeez, I wish my 17yr old son showed this much interest.

Garth - Do you need a ghillie?

This is not an exercise I care to take… the problem is that my office is right next door to the Complete Angler and I visit there nearly every day… in the last 2 months alone I have bought a few Shimano Cumara rod’s and paired them up with a Steez each. I’ll forget about the boat I bought not so long ago and the vehicle I bought to tow the bigger boat… let’s also forget about the petrol and the accommodation and the compo entrance fees and I will really want to forget about my monthly visits to Bass Pro Shops. And let’s face it… there are far worse addictions to have. :-)

robfisher, I hear you brother. Nothing more needs to be said. Lots of "tackle victims" here......

So lads, what do we call this affliction?

Us fishing junkies? We need a name don't we?

For gambling there is one? What about us? Isn't fishing a gamble?

a Credit card statement that have Basil Mannings or Somerset sport read much better than one with Teazers or Maverics. So at least your wife has a choice.Like the skollie that gave his victims a choice between a knife and himself , you can choose which weapon , maar vanaand word jy gesteek.

My bait last year Rock and Surf alone came to 5k .geeezlike ! new gold = bonnies

Bass, fly and sea, about another 10k...

I did a quick count,
found that I have 37 rods of which
about 10 is light tackle,
5 is "surf rods" (2x14ft, 2x12ft, 1x10ft)
the rest is boat - from 10kg up to 37kg ratings
and ofcourse we not talking about damaged and broken rods either.

of them I have reels for probably about 25 rods (roughly)
I know for a fact that I have 5 multipliers
and also 6 lever drag reels (2xmed, 4xlarge - 50 size)
the rest are grinders, different sizes from 2000 up to 12000

Then we not talking lures and all the other stuff, cause I have so many Rapalas and other lures I don't want to count them, most of the lipped lures have never been used. They caught me, not the fish.

Ofcourse there are boats {2x 6.5m skiboats, 1x5m duck} (but I buy wrecks and rebuild them, works out cheaper - and also no concealed damage by previous owner) and the kayak aswell.

I have spent a small fortune on fishing tackle, enough to last me and 5 friends a lifetime

Still cheaper than drugs, and atleast with fishing tackle you have something to show for that money spent.

My dad always told me to do it PROPERLY or LEAVE IT. Being such a good boy I'm just doing what my father told me.

The first and most important part of a addiction is being able to admit it. So all you guys who have posted a remark on this thread are in the clear.
We should worry about the guys not saying a word,
Luckily there is a cure for overspending.
Stay as far as possible from any tackle store-- go to the nearest water and fish, fish,FISH,FISH..............

Hey Kumz, are you well mate? best thing to spend the hard earned coins on - without a doubt.

I hear you bru. Sometimes it's nice when the festive time of the year is around the corner........as I heard from one of Santa's little helpers about who is getting what for Christmas.

It "slipped out" that there is an Alutecnos Albacore Gorilla 20 on order, and that Mum-in-Law is bringing it over from the UK on the 9th December. I also noticed a "big charge" on a CC statement from a prominent UK tackle dealer yesterday........Soooooooo, something nice to look forward to (that I didn't have to sneak out and purchase expensive shiny stuff........to feed the habit so to speak.).

Hopefully, there will also be a heavy jigging rod from ChrisW in the not-too-distant future once production commences.

That said, it all comes out of the annual tackle budget which is now approaching the 16k mark for 2008.......Ouch! That translates into a lot of beer.

Roll on Christmas!!!!

Holy moly, i don't come anywhere close to some of you guys in the tackle addiction, there has been one part completely avoided, what about the total amount spent on cold frosties that acompany one on some journeys to quench that thirst, that must be a big number in it's own right.
