Hi friends,

I’m new to kite fishing and would appreciate any pointers. I bought myself a kite and taxi from Windsong in KZN and was thinking of going the “dropping bait” route when starting off. But now I need braid…. What type can you suggest which is not to pricey or will you go for something like Dacron??

Hi there, I recently also got into kite fishing and have flown my kite all day long with no problems just using 0.6mm nylon, I use a diawa 900h on a 80lb tuna stick to reel the kite in. Works like a bomb.If you planning on using a KP to fly the kite with then I would invest in some braid to fly the kite as the stretch in the nylon has caused a few KP's to crack, just ask stu.

As for the braid used as backing on your kite reel(the one your going to fish with) I went with 100lb HMP, reason for going 100lb vs 80lb was that the 100lb will last longer and in total I have 850m of 100lb HMP braid and 300m of 0.8mm topshot and thats plenty line for a Tyrnos 50II, so if a fish can take 1150m of line then I don't wanna catch it.  As for why I chose HMP, simple it is an affordable braid and is 8-strand too, also it can easily be ordered in custom lengths through Enigma.

My kite setup for dropping baits is a Tor 50 with 200m 0.60mm and 700m 75lbs braid

My setup for ferry drops was 100lbs HMP on a very stout boat rod with a KP but most baits I deploy are to large for the Ferry.

Is That torium
's Gears holding , being cranked against permanent pressure exerted by The Kite Craig ?
i wont be using a reel Again - i figure it's a Little too Strenouous and i Doubt any reel Is designed to be wound up against Tight line .

How have you overcome This obstacle ?

I've been using the same Tor 50 for 5 years now on the kite and probably done in excess of 200km of drop and retrieve.

The reel is smooth and works just as well for fishing, casting and kite drops.

One must tack and set the lift on the kite to maintain no more than 4kg of pull but I prefer 3kg and at that you just reel away.

One should never sukkel with a kite when retrieving it, if you do then the kite is not set correctly.

Windsong kites
40cm Storm kit for wind to 110km
65cm High wind kite for 25-60km
1m for low wind of 12-25km

In the heavy winds 4 strand braid tends to sag when sent a long way out. My experience 70-80lbs 4strand braid is the best.

7-10m of 7mm ski rope, as soon as you go thicker it pulls the kite square to the wind and you can't retrieve the kite

Recently bought a 10m 5mm skei rope and have flown the kite in all winds and it's very stable.

The best tail is the rolls of mesh that is used for onions, butternut etc use 13 turns around your arm make a loop and leave a shorter tag of 5 turns
Tacking depends on type of kite. square kite use a matchstick to shorten to the side you tack or add drag on that side

Yes when using a ferry system you need a super taught system so the ferry doesn't sag into the water. Then I prefer a good 0.80 or 1mm line to manage the tension.

The ferry runs on a system the same as a slide and does.no damage to the line.

Thanks for the advice, the 7mm ski rope tail works like a dream.
Because of the friction that the taxi system will have on the line I decided on 80lb Dacron just to be on the save side. I put 850m of the Dacron on a 10inch KP with one of my kids 5 feet rods and it worked fine even with reeling it in. I Will change the kiddies rod to a strong boat road later
