Hi guys
So I decided it was time for a Mozam fishing holiday as it was long overdue! Searched the web for a few places and decided on BD Lodge(located about 90km north of Vilanculos).
Long and unspoiled beaches greeted us on arrival with a very friendly and helpful staff at the lodge. We drove for 30 km on the beach to reach the lodge.
Decided that that evening will be the first on the water and captain Engelke agreed that we might get stuck into some decend fish. We left the lagoon on Karools(19ft dubbel hull) and we arrived at our spot withing 5 mins.
On arrival it was just birds everywhere with tuna and snoek smashing baitfish like i've only seen in my dreams! First cast with my onda-onda and I was on! My Sensation 8ft pro series dropshot rod handled the fight extremely well, 10mins later I landed a nice +- 6kg bonito. I was hooked!! This carried on until dark, we fished for about a hour with 5 landed bonitos, 3 snoek and one nice size queen fish.
Next day we decided to head out early to a place called "die lader". Apperentlythis is cuta and tuna mecca! On our way there we were greeted by the ever present birds diving. Throught a few spoons and went on with a beaut of a 9kg queenfish! WHat awesome fun on light tackle! We managed 2 bonitos after that before deciding to head for deeper water to search for cuta! Got to the spot and immediately started trawling rapalas. It was quiet for about half an hour, I ask skipper Engelke where all the cuta was that he was speaking about, he replied "wag net bietjie jy sal nou sien"... HIs words was not even cold yet when one rod screamed off! I set the hooks and the next moment all 4 rods were screaming off! I asked him if he trawled into some sort of reef, he said "this is the cutas i was talking about". I was truly amazed and so excited right there! We landed all four cuta, released 2. All in range of 4-8kg. We went on like this for another 2 hour when we decided to call it the day and head back. Got 16 cuta!
We decided the next day will be family day and so it was. Went snorkeling in the lagoon and swam with a school of chokka in 1.5m water! Immense experience! We had sundowners on the lagoon before heading back to the lodge, set the fire and had fresh cuta onthe braai in no time!
NExt morning i decided to fish from the side. Up at 5 am and 5:15 baits was in the water. Had a whole Karapao on the one rod for GT's or Barracuda and a belly shine on the other. Minutes later the belly shine rod was pulled flat! Ran over and made the strike, one or two bumps and OFF!!! Couldnt believe it! As i was walking back i heard my slide rod starting going also! AS i was running over it gave one massive pull and nothing! Pulled the line out and little Karapao bitten in half! After that nothing else bited. We spent the rest of the day lying by the swimming pool sipping cocktails while listening to the sound of waves rolling in! MAgical! That night we had curry crab for dinner which the lodge cook prepared. What a dish!!! Without a doubt the best seafood dish ive had in my life! Something to try when you are there!
Next morning bright and early we head out in search of tuna and snoek again. Got behind the backline and birds everywhere with fish breaching every second! We managed about 21 snoek in just over an hour between 2 anglers! MAssive amounts of fun! The next few day we had the same routine every day. Went out to target snoke, tuna and cuta! I havent had this much fun fishing in all my life! A bucketlist destination ticked off with massive amounts of fish.
IN the 8 days we managed 51 Snoek, 19 cuta, 11 bonito, 5 Queen fish and 2 yellowfin tuna. MOst of these fish caught on light tackle! The skipper knows the area very well and had us onto fish within minutes every day!
BD Lodge offers great charter fishing with very relaxing and top of the range accomodation! To view more on this amazing destination go to www.bdlodge.co.za or go to there facebook page BD Lodge.
We managed to get a few pictures, please note that fish that was kept went to lodge staff and was consumed by us every night. Off course a few fillets came back home. 60% of fish was released.
Just thought id share this experience with you guys!
Cheers
