Hi guys always wondered if I whole prawn (like what you buy at the shops) can work for them if threaded on the same way you bait a sand prawn is . Any guys tried this? Or do you think it could work?

I'm sure the cracker gurus will have more accurate info on the question but with so many usable rock bait options (red bait, crab, armadillo , alikreukel, sea urchin, mussels, siffie ..... Oops) why would you want to go with frozen prawn ?

Because if it does work(well) I would not mind trying it as I can't imagen any packers removing it from a hook and it is obviously alot easier to get than most of the popular cracker baits.

One bait was the tail meat wrapped by two butterflyed heads if that makes sense. The 2nd was tail meat wrapped in well tenderised chocka.

In all honesty, this question has been asked before but for a different species, I have tried them, and only caught Belman! Whole shelled tigers. For cracker, try it, remember, what alot of guys forget, they go buy the prawn, its not that cheap, then go fish with it, then upset because they did not catch anything on it, and decide it doesnt work, if you going to try it, you have to persist with it, you can go throw with crab, and get nothing that day, i take it you get what I mean. try it a few times, and make the decision, I would not personally try it, but will be interested, maybe a bit of advice, butterfly the prawn, expose the meat, and tie the head with cotton, otherwise the head is gone on the cast. I have caught a small cracker in gonubie(east london) on pink prawn , the eating type, just meat though, so maybe it works

Where exactly are intending to use them?

Yup. Nothing escapes the hyenas! Except chitons and what the kiwis call paua. Fact is natural baits will work better.

It works for cracker. The pink one.

Also a very good angler on sealine told me about hitting chokka and pink prawn into a pulp and then putting a sausage of it on a hook.

His results spoke for themselves. But he used it in very specific conditions and spots.

Cracker are oppertunistic feeders. Many have been caught on pilchard for example, feeding below a school of frenzied elf they will eat the pieces of baitfish left behind for example.

I will not purposely throw pink prawn for them, because the blacktail will drive u insane. 99% of the time. But in clearer water, where reef and sand come together definately worth a shot. An example where I would try it, is kleinbrak, to the left of the beach. Gourits where the round rocks and the beach meet on the right.

I'd cast it on the strongest 3/0 you can find, as you could pick up that monster gallie, steenie, or a multitude of other species as well. In short a scratching bait not specifically targetting cracker, but as prepared for them as u can be.

Glad to hear belman eats it. Where I am located, the nearest spots to get prawn will cost me between 50 to 100 rand in petrol costs.

I may as well buy a packet at Fruit & Veg for R69.99 and use that?

I agree on the presentation, you can pick up anything from red Roman to Cob on a bait like that.
