Dead Cuttlefish litter KZN COAST

Over the past week a number of reports have been received of dead fish, cuttlefish and squid along the KZN coast. In discussions with a number of fishermen and conservation managers it appears that the fish species being caught by fishermen has also changed from the ‘norm’ in the past few weeks, not to mention sardines being netted at the end of August, which is also out of the ordinary.

The surfers, divers and lifeguards have commented how bitterly cold the water has been. It is suspected that there is a cold water upwelling along the KZN coast at present which is affecting fish catches and possibly also causing the die-off of a number of species. It appears unlikely the die-offs are pollution related because similar reports are being received for areas along the whole KZN coastline.

yip.. was thinking how i would of gone totally on seeing all that lying around

its that time of year when strnge things happen.. a member here last year i think stumbled on a marlin of sorts at macassar

Thank god it's not pollution or offshore drilling etc and just upwelling. The fish would be having a feeding frenzy if they weren't hiding in the deep! Bodes well for some late sardines though.
