Howzit chaps,

Right, so as most of you know, I got the opportunity to fish Applethwaite with BNV a few weekends back. I received the invite the day before, and I was thrilled to get the chance to fish this dam. I had only heard of the fishing being amazing with a couple fish over 3kilos coming out. Frogging, spinnerbaits, swim jigs and soft jerkbaits were the main baits I was planning to throw. Power fishing...oooh yes I love it.

I woke at 3AM, I just couldn't sleep with all the excitement. Vaughn fetched me at around 4:15 or so. We were off and talking about our plan of action. We had only just over 3 hours to fish the dam before we had to head back home. So we had to cover some water.

Upon arrival, I walked down to the water's edge to find the water to be a nice tea colour but the clarity was perfect. It was overcast, a bit of wind was present with a couple drops of rain here and there.

We were on the water and I headed towards the far side of the dam. I threw a spinnerbait to no avail. I needed to throw that swim jig. I started working the bank, casting perpendicularly towards the grass. It wasn't long before I had a few fish hit me. For some odd reason they were very shy to swallow it...

I reached a long grass point and had a few casts alongside and across it. The swim jig was smashed and a very nice, fat fish of over 2kilos showed itself. She was hungry hey!

I caught quite a few more fish when Vaughn joined me, also armed with a swim jig. The wind blew harder against the bank we were fishing and we were getting chomped like there was no tomorrow! There was a point when we would catch 2 fish consecutively, have another cast without catching, then we would get smashed once again! I never dreamed this day was going to be like this. We were just having a flippen ball of a time! Soon Vaughn got himself into a battle with a nice 2.1kilo model. Very nice.

We caught a tad bit more fish until we were fishing the adjacent bank. Things went a little quiet, but then I was eaten by a 2.3kilo steroid-pumped fish! I have never...ever seen a fish of that size jump so high in my life...
You will see it on the vid in a while

It went quiet once again with a couple dinks coming out here and there. I kicked past Vaughn who was working the spots harder than I. I think that's my problem, I don't work a spot very hard until I move on. I have an excuse though, I just don't like the fact that someone else would kick past me to a potentially better spot that I'm working! It's all in my head I guess...

Anyway, I was a good couple meters away from BNV when I see him set the swim jig's hook deep into something...a tree maybe?
If you watch closely on the video, he sets the hook and the fish doesn't budge at all. He said it was a small one, until it jumped...
I think he got a little fright hey. This "thing" was pulling him...I can't even explain it. Insane to watch. It jumped, or at least tried to, 2 or 3 times before BNV got his hands on it. Man I was happy for him. I thought that I'd be jealous if I ever saw someone catch that, but man I was just excited that I got to see this make his day! A 4kilo beaut fo sho!

Once again, well done man!

A couple meters on and he hooked into a 2.05kilo on his swim jig. He told me it felt like nothing to catch it after the ordeal that he just went through. I think we would go to great lengths to get a 2.05 in some of the comps we fish hey!

So we fished a little while longer until we were off the water. We caught over 30 fish between the 2 of us. What an amazing day. Those kinds of experiences, I think, are just priceless...

Thanks for the invite BNV. It was a fantastic day out.

Equipment I used:

Falcon Bucoo 7ft H
