Good Afternoon Guys

I noticed something last night while organizing my tackle box - Some lures have split rings as the connectors and others do not. Is there an advantage of having a split ring on the nose of the lure or is it better to attached the main line directly to the nose of the lure?

If there is benefit in having the split ring, is it advisable to have split rings on some lures (e.g. floating minnnows, crankbaits etc.) and no split rings on others (e.g. Heddon Zara Spook etc.)?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I reckon that the split rings give the lure more free action, alot of guys use a non looped knot straight to the lure and that kills the action especially on lighter or smaller lipped lures, tying a non looped knot to the split ring will give it the same freedom of movement as a looped knot would, well that's my theory anyway, hope it helps bud :)

Thanks for the response. It seems like there is more action with a ring or loop knot on the nose, versus clinching down tight on the plug nose. The split ring seems allow free motion as opposed to a tight knot on the nose that will dampen the lures action. I've read that it is a good idea to clinch your knot tight IN the gap at the start of the split ring so it always point opposite the plug. This will avoid it getting stuck on the nose ring.
