Braid leader or Florocarbon leader?

Hi all,

At the moment I use 50lbs Power Pro braid as my main line on my Shimano Saragosa 20000. For my leader I use 180lbs JDB braid for catching sharks. Some say you must rather use fluorocarbon. What is the best?

Can't understand why nobody gave you some advice:?

On grinders: Braid to Braid leader.

By my understanding and what i learned from a few experienced anglers is to stick to braid leader with a grinder BECAUSE the mono/florocarbon is heavier than the braid, which would result in windknots/guide wrapping or heaps of line running of your spool when casted with force ( for distance etc.) .

Reason being that as the line travels off the spool, the lighter braid catches up very quickly with the slower traveling mono/floro at the front.

I am by no- means an expert. Any other advice from fellow sealiners would be appreciated by him and myself.

Tight lines buddy and sorry for the late reply.::slr::::tight:((goodp__seal1_:)

Welcome to Sealine :)

Im no expert but I can give feedback on what I am using.

40lb Suffix with 180lb JDB braid leader.

I have this in my in-eds setup as well as my scratching setup.

I've had issues in the past getting reefed or slapped of by a tail while using Mono leader as I didn't want to cast a leader thicker than .80

Using the braid leader improved distance and I now have less snap offs etc.

Hope this helps :):welcomesea:

Well i still use flouro leader. The popping guys do it. The jigging guys do it or am i blind to the advantages of braid to braid. No shock resistance no good abrasive resistance in the bricks. More visible close to your bait and lures
Im not saying dont do it its just use a bit shorter leader if windknots is a problem.

Maybe someone can shed some light the shore spinning guys?

Just had it confirmed by a expert.
Windknots 99% caused by line/braid lay on the reel. If line lay is wrong chances are you will have windknots.next is wrong setup on guides and wrong knot between flouro and braid. Nothing to do with flouro slowing the speed line leaves the spool.

You might be right on the wind knots point.

Just remember he asked specifically which one is preferable when targetting sharks (Vis etc not so important).

I don't target sharks, but use short mono leader for scratching between rocks with my multi setup, and long braid leader when fishing with my larger grinder setup from beach/ onto sand.

Agreed on the shark fishing. For sure it will have a advantage under the right condition.(thinner diametre higher breaking strain in heavy current) I just wanted to expel the myth that using flouro leaders causes windknots. So if conditions allow rather use flouro as leader. The advantage outweighs the cons.... i have had 100lb flouro ripped to shreds by shark skin. Would like to see what it does to a 180lb braid leader. Any one got a photo?
Braid or flouro? Im with flouro.

Very good answer guys.

I stick to braid leader for that direct contact between myself and shark/fish

If I were jigging/popping I would look at floro/mono.

Remember braid can cause hook to rip out of a fish with soft mouths(Due to no stretch etc.)

So for sharks, braid to braid with either FG /PR knot or bob sands OR Stitch for maximum strength.

But once you get reefed with a stitched leader, you tend to lose a lot of line and would not have the time on the rocks/beach to restitch. ( I carry tied leaders in my bag)

My experience a long mono or fluro leader with very thin braid and the leader that runs through the eyes you can get badass windknots even throwing your line off. It depends how long your leader is. I had this problem with a Sustain which has very good line lay, shortened the leader to outside the eyes and problem gone. Such a short mono leader is useless for shark fishing.

Don't have a photo but can say that it is very resistant to abrasion.
I have caught over 30 cows from Feb to March this year and they love slapping and rolling over the leader in between kelp. All of them caught on the same 180lb leader ranging between 30 and 70kg. Makes the leader look like a old well used piece of braid with a few frays here and there.

Notable to add that for the short time I was fishing with a mono leader I didn't get any wind knots or snap offs while casting. Good line lay and Fuji KWags I believe helped allot there.

Nice one foose

Like i said on a earlier post. Maybe im blind to using braid and braid leader. I would never have even considered to do it that way.
The type of fishing i mostly do it will not work 100%.
But now if im in a position to some shark fishing i know what to do for leader.::slr::
Thats how we learn and share here on the forum.

Thanks Foose, how long do you make the leader?

Hi Pylstert

I have my leader 2x the length of my rod.
This way I have a few wraps around the spool and I get to wrap the leader on my Bionic finger for the cast.
Main line to leader knot I use a FG and you can barely hear it going through the guides.

Not saying that is the right way but it works for me :)

Exactly the same as I do on my Metaloid/ BG6500 setup.

What braid do you use on your BG6500 and how much did you manage to fit?

I also use a "full" length leader with 1 or 2 wraps around the spool and never had problems.

50lb Boss Braid (8strand). I normally use 100 or 120lb Suffix Braid leader. Honestly not sure how much I fit on the reel , know it's enough for any edible that could pick me up :?

Exactly 550m of 40lb suffix 832 with about 8m of 180lb JDB braid leader on the BG6500 with Metaloid 13.6 for In Eds.

400m 40lb Suffix 832 and 180lb JDB Braid leader on the BG5000 with Metaloid 12.6 for Eds.
