Hi everyone. I want to make use of good tidings and a strong Rand. After the United States, who's units are geofenced, it seems Auz is the cheapest.

Does anyone know if Auz units are geofenced? If they aren't, will I be able to buy South African maps to load on it?

I am traveling to Auz so will pick it up myself, this no P&P!

Thanks in advance!

Can't answer on the geofencing but I can comment on getting stuff from overseas.

I was looking for a little Garmin Striker 5CV for my bass boat and was not faced with the geofencing issue since, although it has GPS, it doesn't have maps, only mark locations, boat speed etc... But shopping around SA, best I could do (from a known source) was R6300. I bought mine through eBay from the US and it landed at my door after ALL costs at R4010.

Just saying.

Yeah I just hate feeling like I'm getting ripped off. Lowrance HDS 7 Carbon retails for Aus$1550, which equates to R14292.  Lowrance SA charges R25700 for the same unit.

The european models aren't geofenced, but not as cheap as the Auzie ones. Waiting for feedback from the Auzies . . .

Ok they got back to me.

For info, Auz models are NOT geofenced and they are willing to load South African maps If you buy a map package.

Obviously Lowrance SA wont cover the warranty...

Any reason why not going the Garmin route?
- garmin doens't have geofence
- garmin warranty is worldwide (doesn't matter where you bought the unit)

I bought 2 units from the US...one of them after nearly 1y of usage had a sonar problem
As I live in Mozambique I runned all the diagnosis process over the phone with garmin SA (navworld) until the moment we realize unit had to be sent to them for more in depht diagnosis...it didn't took them a couple of hours to comeback to me stating that the unit had a major fault and would be replaced under warranty

navworld even identified the shop and date I bought that unit from

Do yourself a favour and contact global marine based in cape town for a quote. I purchased a Garmin echomap 92SV through them and could not find it cheaper anywhere else in SA. Chat to Taryn at 021 555 1574

You guys must realize that garmin has purchased navonics. So the navonics sd cards will be able to be utilized on garmin units in the near future

Am i dumb? How can a combo unit be geofenced? So if i stay in America buy it install it on my yacht decide to sail to South Afrika or Timboktoo for that matter somewhere i will lose all functionality on my unit? Not nice. Whats the use then. They lose a big client base if that is the case.

Yep, as dumb as it seems those Lowrance people geofence units bought in the US. They obviously don't want us to import the stuff directly in order to sidestep the local dealers.

If you're looking to buy in Australia you may as well give Singapore & Hongkong a shot as well things in Australia are actually quite expensive.
Speaking from Personal experience I'd go Garmin over lowrance any day of the week.

Only reason I am looking at Australia instead of HK and Singapore is because I can organise collection myself thus avoiding import duties.

I'm not familiar with Garmin. I owned a Garmin 3 plus 20 years ago which was used when flying. What is the Garmin equivalent of the Lowrance HDS? LOOKING Looking for a chartplotter/fishfinder combo that is able to record sonar logs.
