I recently (before this pandemic) had the pleasure of helping a non Sealiner friend of mine to find a scarborough rod & reel outfit for scratching, & in specific a Assasin Rockhopper rod (10') & matching 5" KP De Lux reel.
The seller of this combo is non other than one of our members nl. "Haroldg" from Durban.
So, it's actually quite interesting to see what value & contribution Sealine has ito general chatting, seeking advice, or posting info on tackle, catches etc, or advertizing, networking & bringing people together as in this case.
I Am quite sure it happens weekly on various threads where guys who do not know each other meet up, get to know each other better, become friends, & a new relationship/friendship starts, & I merely prove a point by pointing this out how important it is to network & the benefits of connecting people.
So, with the possible deal in mind, Harold still insisted that my friend should first visit him, then field test the combo & see if it really suits his need, before making any payment, & then decide from there & keep his options open.
Needless to say, my friend had to drive down to Durban for work related matters & met Harold at his house, where Harold insisted "have a look-see & dry test run" first, before you decide to take it or make a compulsive descicion & be unhappy later.
After both of them had an apparent longer than anticipated chat & visit, just like South Africans can do, it was down to the the real reason for the visit.
According to my friend Harold has a wealth of knowledge & experience he shared with him first, then the "bling" was taken out & displayed.
Now my friend is no novice to rock & surf angling & previously had used a 4" KP some years ago, but obviously lost this touch a bit.
One thing led to the other, & Harold showed him the outfit, explained the basics & apparently my friend was super stoked.
But, then Harold took it a step further, & in his back yard he demonstrated the 2 basic KP casting methods, nl. the Sheleza sweep & the side cast.
He further shared links wrt the Wallis cast using centre pin reels, especially in gullies, of the bricks, estuaries, scratching situations, using lighter end tackle & to use tips for casting his KP.
Knowing my friend, he had to take a video clip of both methods so he could go back home, study & practise it carefully & to enable him to really get distance & improve his casting technique.
Now, I have to say to the would-be critics, that the home video is by no means a thourough tutorial, or a pre-planned or rehearsed nor the hard & fast rule of scarborough casting, but was a spur of the moment descicion by Harold in limited space, to guide & give my friend a head start & a basic idea.
So, all in all, I obtained Harold's permission to use these clips which might help other current Scarborough or would be users/owners & to give them a good idea how to start off or at least try a new method of casting.
I herewith thank both Harold & my friend who both agreed to sharing it, & thanks again for Harold sharing his vast knowledge & experience without a hint of hesitation or selfishness with another angler.
He even parted with 1 of his favourite shad tin spoons.
This is what real anglers do best......we share.
