Hey all, I have read through most of the posts here on sealine and elsewhere regarding baits for mussel cracker. I had read that armadillo, fresh red bait, red crab and alikrik are great baits for them. I however am wondering whether a cray tail + occy combo would work for them ? have any of you had success with either of these baits or even this combo for mussel cracker ? your input will be highly appreciated. ![]()

When you targeting bigger fish you need to decide what you want to take your bait and what you don't want to. Cracker will definitely eat cray tail and occy combo, but he won't be there for the occy. Also, all the little reef sharks and duckbill rays love occy (and cray tail) so you will probably have to deal with the by catch, more so than with redbait, alikruk etc. Cray tail cut in half length wise with a 3/0 mustard hoodlum and you will be able catch a lot of interesting fish, and a cracker if he is around.

This is a great observation, i didn't think about this. I will definitely give this a go on a scratching setup and throw a alikrik/armadillo bait out for a mussel cracker on a bigger rod. Thank you for this insight. ![]()

Also sitting all day for a cracker bite gets boring too...So use a bait that will get you other species too but adapt to the spot and fish, ie..if chokka or occy is picking up every shyshark in the area, shame, don't fish chokka... My best cracker was in the middle at night on a low tide beach on chokka prawn combo, waiting for a steenie, but most crackers I have caught on big blobs of red bait fishing for gallies..alikruk I've waited all day for a bite too many times, though they love the stuff, siffie also..so I leave the siffies and eat the alikruks. Fishing at my feet for gallies I get maybe 1 cracker for every 5 gallies on big red bait blobs. When you see footage of them underwater, or watch the babies in the rock pools, they are very smart and will wait for other fish to eat first and see that the coast is clear and them go in for the chow.. So don't strike till the cracker takes you down, have enough layers in the bait to keep the peckers happy but also entice mr cracker is my tactic. I must stress that large parts of the coast the cracker population is under severe pressure if not collaped at the extreme parts of the range, and they are resident and slow to grow and reproduce so please take care of the stock. I keep very few as nice as they eat..I am very selective about the size I keep of them. "Cray tail cut in half length wise with a 3/0 mustard hoodlum and you will be able catch a lot of interesting fish, and a cracker if he is around." Yup, everything eats kreef ! LOL If there are too many peckers, use a crab..if lots of shellfish and peckers, use a tough shellfish and a few layers of chum over to get a feed on..Put back any undersize or breeding stock please. Stick to limits.

Short answer. Yes it does work. RASSPL first nationals biggest edible day 3. You can still see the piece of occy leg sticking out of the corner, was wrapped in craytail. Long answer, biggest stingray for the comp was still tiny at that stage, so i was trying my luck on the heavy outfit for something big and flat at the time. I know in the Transkei area the locals target cracker (aka brusher in the TK) almost always armed with crayfish as bait on a strong hook. Crayfish is quite abundant over there in certain parts. They usually come walking back from the rocks with something, more often than not a Kobbie.

how do you guys rig your crayfish baits ? do you leave the shell on, so that it becomes more difficult for the peckers to destroy the bait or do you take use the meat only ?

I just want to know if spotties will eat crab. it is slightly disappointing, specially if it takes and fights similar to cracker in foul area. 1m length, puts up a punch on medium tackle.
